@octopus.energy your brilliant customer services have spent 2 months trying to get my smart meter commissioned with no success. Now the SEC has been amended to support 4g in the North, what do I need to do to get a 4g comms hub installed?! I'm at my wits end!

Nell was my niece, a bright light that was extinguished far too soon.

If you had told me in 1996 that nowadays @mattvenn.net would be MCing to his own tunes as part of giving a lightning talk at Hackaday Berlin, while wearing a massive ASIC hat and custom ASIC chain, I wouldn't actually have been surprised, and I can't think of higher praise than that.

Sometimes I miss the classic Yokshire hills and dales now I've moved to the Vale of York. Not tonight though, so much sky.

This reminds me of the fantastic recipe for braised bacon and peas in Jacob Kenedy's Geometry of Pasta, which is delicious.

This seemed like a particularly sneaky compromise too. You've really got no hope of being immune to this sort of thing if you accept you aren't going to be writing everything from scratch.

Sortition - Wikipedia

A good friend of mine argued that sortition would address many of the problems we see with modern democracy. Random selection by lot for a fixed tenure, it works for juries, could it work more generally?

Does it have to be python? If so, could you use subprocess.run to execute a curl -k to fetch the cert?

Regardless, it is definitely more fun

Trying a new approach to removing the tree this year: electric chainsaw. Jury is out on whether it makes more or less mess than just dragging the tree out through the front door.

Advent of Code 2024

I (only) just completed all 25 days of Advent of Code 2024! #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com

Phew, that's been confounding, confusing, but most of all fun!

Yes, the Children of Time trilogy are all great reads, as are many of his science fiction books. He lives in Leeds apparently!

Day 21 - Advent of Code 2024

Part two of this really kicked my ass for a while. I've been able to console myself with the thought that i'm solving some generally applicable problem with most of the challenges, but this one, not so much.

I feel your pain, I finally got this one today, after many, many failed ideas and bugs, the last of which only manifested in the actual input, not the examples, much to my dismay.

#AoC2024 day 16 part 2: tfw you finally beat your head against something long enough that it eventually succumbs to sheer bloody mindedness. I am proud I persevered, I am not proud of what I ended up with and I am not refactoring 😂

Yorkshire Evening, Merry Christmas!

Stinking Bishop, Doux de Montagne, Brie, Ossau Iraty, Comte, Stilton, aged Gouda, Pont L'Eveque, Smoked Red Fox, Cathedral City.

One of these things is not like the others, but they're all going on crackers.

One Christmas I used a dozen eggs, 2 pats of butter and half a bottle of white wine vinegar trying to make hollandaise on Christmas morning for eggs Benedict, and still ended up with a runny mess. Now I sous vide my hollandaise on Christmas eve, and reheat it while I poach the eggs. This is the way.
