Grateful for this strong word of rebuke from Bishop Donna Simon. #ELCA
A video message from #ELCA Presiding Bishop Curry and the six synod bishops of Minnesota.
Standing with you, dear friends.
I met Bishop Budde just over a month ago. She’s as real as it gets. Not surprised in the least that she’s in Minnesota today. Praying & fasting with you, friends. #StandWithMinnesota
A letter from the six #ELCA bishops of MN.
“We are tired, and our hearts are broken. Yet we are not deterred…This has been a season marked by profound grief. It is also a season in which we have refused to be defined by what the baptismal liturgy names as ‘the forces that defy God.’”
"As a church, we are concerned by the trend of law enforcement and federal agents involved in immigration enforcement relying on the use of force in our communities without sufficient accountability or oversight. God calls us to be witnesses to God’s presence, healing and hope."
"As followers of Jesus, we seek justice for the nations. As a church in this country, we call for what transpires next to center the Venezuelan people and their right to self-determination."
At this turn of the year, when the nights are long in the northern hemisphere, remember this is a time when light shines the brightest. Let the light of Christ in you shine, friends. Happy New Year.
Friends, however this Christmas Eve finds you, know that it’s never been about whether you were ready or not. God is with us, this night and always.

It was removed from the ELCA website because it wasn’t a unanimous statement from the entire Conference of Bishops. We have an internal policy that requires consensus from the entire conference to speak as “The Conference of Bishops.”
Rev. Yehiel Curry succeeds Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, who served for 12 years and was the first woman to lead the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
First African American presiding bishop, Bishop Yehiel Curry, installed by the ELCA. His predecessor was the first woman presiding bishop. And this is a progressive mainstream denomination? @ericowens.bsky.social

Bp. Simon issues a pastoral letter on political violence. "As Christians--Lutheran Christians--we must meet this moment of division and unrest with a servant heart. To paraphrase Martin Luther, God doesn’t need our peacemaking, but our neighbor does." www.css-elca.org/post/pastora...

But he who loves the people around him will create community wherever he goes.

Man, that is a deep cut for a lot of us, even in the clergy. I will admit I had to look him up.
He chose to resign. Disciplinary procedures that would remove a pastor from the roster of ministers of Word & Sacrament don’t move this fast.
Statement from #ELCA #Minneapolis Area Synod Bishop Jen Nagel:
“As people of faith, we are called to peacemaking towards a vast reduction of gun-related violence. The pervasiveness of #gunViolence in the U.S. is not a reality we should accept.”

True, but those who say Palestine = Hamas all point to Oct 7 as a reference point. It’s definitely a turning point for the conflict.
This is the point that needs to be stressed. “evangelical” is a transliteration of the Greek “euangelion” - the literal meaning is “good message” and is also translated “gospel”
The ELCA is in no way affiliated with the American ‘evangelical’ movement. We’re an entirely different church.
