Well if I wasn't devastated about this enough, along comes this song to really thump me in the gut

No one watching can conclude much else than this is the Stephen Miller presidency.

Don't let all the #Greenland / Iceland (?!) talk swamp Trump's casual dropping in of imminent prosecutions over the "rigged" 2020 election...

This is not an administration that is likely to accept a polite but firm “no”. Economic sanction now surely follows and it remains to be seen if NATO leaders follow Mark Carney’s lead in refusing to simply “go along to get along”

It was, quite deliberately, a menacing intimidation tactic dressed up for the refined audience at Davos.

For a clear read on Trump’s thinking, see Stephen Miller’s defiant assertion of America’s right to act like a superpower, or Treasury Sec Scott Bessent’s description of Denmark as “irrelevant”.

Although he seemed to rule out the use of force to take the island, Trump spent much of his speech discussing the US’s military might- helpfully reminding the audience about the unilateral deposing of Venezuela’s leader this month.

Trump's #Davos speech rapid response:

#Trump’s rambling, 90 minute speech may have sounded somewhat tepid to those expecting fireworks and bombast over Greenland. But all the clues were there that Trump feels deeply driven to acquire what he sees as being rightfully his to take.

Eating dry cereal from the box and wondering if Scott Bessent feels good about himself right now.

I am sat making notes on Trump's #Davos speech and yet somehow his irreverence has almost been eclipsed by his Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent.

Denmark is "irrelevant" according to fellow NATO member.

I read David Plouffe's essay about what Democrats need to do, and he has a brilliant idea: come up with an economic plan that appeals to people.

No mention of the information environment, and how regular voters will hear about and believe these appealing economic policies, but that must not matter.

🔥 From @statuscoupnews.bsky.social : “This is nuts. What the fuck is going on? I’ve never protested in my life… they tell you it’s immigrants — it’s fucking anybody. They’re just trying to scare people. I’m not paid to be here. I have to work in the morning. This is wrong.”

This- over any other possible strategy- is how Trump upends elections, or even cancels them altogether. He will create the conditions that he then will claim make it too dangerous to hold secure elections. This is the play.

The Donroe Doctrine- not just in international politics but in every aspect of his life is this: say the quiet part out loud and work to normalise it. No cover up or fake agenda needed. Say the outrageous thing loud and convince people of the reasons to be proud of it.

Majority of girls and young women in UK alter behaviour to feel safe, study finds Girlguiding survey reveals rising fears of harassment, with many avoiding public transport or changing what they wear

People, women have been screaming this at you for literal centuries.

Any other women out there do the "keys between your fingers" thing?

Per my last post- this is also true. It's not that the law doesn't matter, it's just that it isn't a sentient being. It is enacted by, adhered to by, ignored by and undermined by people. When those people are doing all of those from with the Oval Office, it's real bad

This is how he'll attempt to stay in power or throw the midterms. The law is only as strong as the people who uphold it

Free speech is the counterweight—it is the check on government control. That is why censorship is the authoritarian’s dream.

Charlie Kirk shooting: another grim milestone in America’s long and increasingly dangerous story of political violence Increasing polarisation and a lack of measured debate is fuelling violence in a nation awash with guns.

I wrote about the scenarios that could play out, and I see a difficult but most definitely available path out of where the US (and increasingly the UK) has cornered itself.

Hopefully it's a positive note at the end of a fairly sober piece theconversation.com/charlie-kirk...
