One was on the translation of the King James Bible; the other on the paratexts of Maragaret Cavendish's poetry and scientific writings.

The English one was more historical; the history one was more literary.

My Guiness looks a little off, but the cider is a great reward to walking one of the Howth cliff trails

Working out of an Irish hotel and I'm reminded of some words from Ted Lasso that speak to me feeling quite American at the moment: "Air conditioning is a privilege, not a right."

(It's not even hot outside)

As of Tuesday, only one copy - OMW - remains. I was hoping to grab a copy of cheesy moon

My partner and I did that route getting on at Fargo a few years ago. Dining car and Glacier at sunset were two of our favorite parts of the experience. So many stories to hear

Pretty sure a strengths assessment site doesn't need 2fa and security questions. Who is going to hack into my account to see that an algorithm decided I'm a "thinker"?

I appreciate your perspective (and sharing it). My first day as an instructional designer is tomorrow - I think I'm in a similar boat, perspectivewise, and will likely have many convos about this

I can't pay for something that makes up an alternative for Shortcakes when that diner already exists in Stillwater!

(kidding - I assumed it was a rights issue when other OSU details were accurate. Loved the book; it was so human)

Moving and changing local airports has introduced a new O'Hare quirk, which has now happened 2 subsequent times: arrival flight lands an hour early. Park and wait for scheduled gate to be open. Get to gate well past scheduled arrival time.

At least today's layover isn't 10 minutes.

Saw Yo-Yo Ma perform tonight. He was exquisite. Wonderful to step away from life's worries for a few hours and be enchanted by Bach (and others).

As a soft-G person, I liked the rationalization that if you treat it like an initialism (g-i-f), the soft G makes sense. But if we extend the "how do you pronounce graphic" to other letters, we'd be changing the pronunciation of a lot of vowels in things like NASA or FBI or scuba.

Same. I was on a 15-hour flight and realized minor dehydration gave me an uneasy stomach. I'll take extra bathroom trips if it means less discomfort.

My last flight into ORD landed 40 minutes early. We parked for 20 minutes and they let people use the bathroom as we waited for the gate to be available before resuming taxiing. We got to the gate 10 minutes late.

One of my favorite faculty anecdotes was when Dr Dickey told a story shout some Eliot conference in StL and visitors really wanted her to take them to some spot of biographical significance. "It's a parking lot now, but sure we can go."

Early modernist here: my grad institution had a lot of medievalists involved in department administration. They may have been the more active/vocal part of the MedRen interdisciplinary group, too.

One unexpected benefit of leaving the TT job (to support partner taking a job at a larger university)? Relearning to love my local, non-academic library.

Nebraska gets Schlafly Pumpkin Ale, so I guess I can get my basic on this fall.

Labor Day seems an appropriate occasion to spend the morning filling out job applications.

I did that route, getting on at Fargo. My partner and I (mid-30s) were usually the youngest people in the dining car. Wasn't uncommon for older travelers to say they preferred it to the hassle of air travel. We'd fly if we had to do it again, unless stopping at Glacier NP.

"But, your fathers, who had not adopted the fashionable idea of this day, of the infallibility of government . . . They went so far in their excitement as to pronounce the measures of government unjust, unreasonable, and oppressive, and altogether such as ought not to be quietly submitted to."

There's a line in Viet Thanh Nguyen's "The Uncommitted" that seems apropos...

My partner got me a Sodastream to try to economize my soda vice. I used to buy Pepsi in bulk for similar reasons.

Tried accessing all the URLs listed in an author's note from a book published in 2000. Was not expecting the only working one to be an angelfire link.

We were so disappointed they were closed for the season when we visited over Easter a few years ago. All the billboards!

It's also awful and should be avoided at all costs.

I am also not a big fan of Chicago-style deep dish, but it's more tolerable.

(Also, hi, Rebecca! Sorry my first interaction in a while is StL slander)

Oh, Early Modern English. Will my students have comments about "how greatly I Iong after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ"? I imagine so.
