It's told from the pov of a young mom who moves into the suburbs & becomes suspicious that her creepy new neighbor might be a killer. 👀 She befriends some of the other neighbors & they start snooping. The vibe is quirky & mystery. I liked it!

Thanks for another great chat! On the topic of books, check out these books by autistic authors that are available in hoopla. I only picked 1 book per author so a lot of these authors have more titles available that you may be able to read for free courtesy of your local library.

Thank you for the fun questions!

I just released my new Runner Owen short story today, if a murder mystery set in a queer accepting gaslamp fantasy world (with vampires) sounds like your thing.

I actually write in a lot more genres than horror! As a professional world-builder/-designer, I do this in both fantasy and sci-fi genres. I also write reviews from time to time, games and books in particular!

I can also do copy writing for marketing, if needs be!

Since I don’t have a TARDIS, I love searching for documentaries or podcasts that focus on a specific historical event.

I love retelling folktales from my childhood. I did a picture book retelling of Kaguya Hime for grad school and it was fun! One day I’ll work on a MG retelling of this favorite tale.

I journal a lot. As someone who has horrible anxiety, journaling helps me stay grounded.

Hi #HorrorWritersChat!

I’m Tashi, the writer of supernatural , psychological and slasher horror.

I’m watching Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher and loving it!

Next Saturday is my birthday, so I need to decide which horror movie to watch in theaters. They all look intriguing! 🤩

Q2. I write things and then let other people tell me what genre they are. They're all on some spectrum of spooky-speculative-literary. And I write poetry. I used to do a fair bit of journalism but not as much in the past couple years.

Am branching out into cosy crime. Have written alt history, Norse myth retellings & I've 17thC historical fiction on the go.
I write dark poetry not nec. horror.
I write occasional book reviews at Horror Tree too.
Horror writing focuses emotion, makes you consider tension esp.

'Ello, #HorrorWritersChat, I am a sad monster what writes weird horror and I've been watching the documentary series 'Behind the Monsters'. As for reading, I read 'Lock the Last Door' by our own @vincentlore.bsky.social, which was a delight.

So. Much. Research. I'm currently drafting a book set in the mid-90s, and while I can rely on my memory to some degree, I was five then. I've looked up fashion catalogs and information about brands and pictures of school interiors, etc. Even common TV sizes.

I only write stories set in some kind of present or within my lifetime. If it’s the latter, I rely on memory (and a little memory-jogging) for accuracy. But actually I’m not too fussy, because most of my stories are written from a subjective first-person POV.

As cool as time travel would be I'd probably end up setting off a cataclysmic chain of events :')

For my WIP I'm doing a ton of research. Learning about common vocabulary, reading about popular alcohol for the time... No detail is too small!

Lots and lots of research. The Tales From The Night Garden series spans over centuries (thanks, vampires), so I literally have an encyclopedia I've compiled of research notes, lore, character details, and prominent things that are happening in history around plot points.

Mostly it's research, as that's my main training. It feeds into just about everything I write* as I find tangible details best brings the work to life.

*this goes doubly so for when I wrote contracts; believe me, it's VERY essential...

You can't substitute research or immersing yourself in a period, or feedback from an expert.

That's why I write a lot of Catholic-relic based horror and monk-punk fantasy stories. I spent 10 years on medieval saints' lives so it's something I feel comfortable writing about.

Definitely time travel, like I assume all of us have access to. Might explain some of the issues with our current timeline too….

#HorrorWritersChat

Little bit of research, little bit of playing with anachronisms. Ideally I want the details to be as right as possible, or at least believable. There will always be THAT reader who says theremins didnt exist in the Old West.

Ooh, I would research. Plus watch movies made during that time - if it's like in the 80s - or reading novels written during that time if it was farther back. I hope they included references that made more sense to them than it does to us because that's a whole vibe.
