Hiring a data/lab manager in my research group! Mostly data “wrangling”, data viz, coding for analysis, lots of learning on the job, coordinating our global data projects with many collaborators, oversight of lab operations. 23 June deadline. Job # 78844 jobs.universityofcalifornia.edu
I was a little surprised to see something less studied than winter limnology! But there it is! Great to work with this team led by Faith Ferrato and the @sapnasharma.bsky.social team

A schematic diagram showing an idealised pattern of phytoplankton community succession, with and without a storm disturbance. The storm temporarily reverses the typical seasonal phytoplankton succession pattern.
Really good to have contributed to this new study, which uses long-term lake data to detect the impacts of storm events on seasonal phytoplankton growth: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

“It’s raining men” is one of my all time faves - indirectly water related with all of the meteorological drivers references.
Map of global lake distribution, colored by the number of SWOT overpasses per 21 day cycle. There are many lakes with a high number of SWOT overpasses at high northern latitudes, but there are also tens of thousands to more than a million lakes on every continent. Lakes are graphed by latitude and longitude on the edges of the figure.
Do you work on lakes globally? Check out what is, to my mind, the most complete global database of lakes (~6M) and associated attributes, newly published in WRR. Also the basis for SWOT lake data. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Thanks for sharing, Steve! I look forward to reading this, particularly as I’m involved in co-organizing several UN World Water Day activities this week.

Ice rescue
Researchers from UTSC and York University took an ice safety and rescue course to prepare for winter limnology research on Lake Simcoe.
Thanks Ichiro!
Thank you for the update, Ichiro! It’s been a cold winter thus far here in Canada and we already have a lot more ice than we had last winter. Please keep me posted and happy new year!
