At least in Jan 2021 there was the argument that they were calling on Pence to act immediately rather than telegraphing it several months in advance.

It just seems a really bizarre idea when the whole point of A25S4 is to be able to act quickly. If you've got the time to stand around going through a drawn-out formal procedure commission, you may as well just impeach.

In many Central-Eastern European countries, "ghetto" nowadays often refers to Roma, which is perhaps a bit more of a darkly clear "transition" of the term 😕

I think a swastika would be taken as evidence of antisemitic hate in itself, except in the very unlikely scenario the perpetrator could demonstrate that they genuinely didn't know what a swastika was.

Yeah, and if it's the kind of law where enforcement is going to be consciously lax and the aim is merely to reduce rather than stop, then they could've just gone with a general ban on tobacco sales in the UK.

Every single time. At at least a subsconscious level, they all know which side they chose.

And if it's so obviously for their own good then how about banning the people currently doing it?!

Yup, and we can't forget the context that this is an explicitly ageist policy directed at younger people in a context where we have worse political polarisation by age than any other time in modern UK political history. The kids are pissed that they're always the ones being told to make sacrifices.

"I did this violent crime out of a sudden rush of emotive hate" generally gets you more lenient treatment than "I did this violent crime out of calculated self-interest because I was offered money to do it".

Possibly, though that if anything probably makes it worse for him to admit that, I would think.

The parallel I like to go to is imagine that to change religion, you had to obtain an official "Religious Conversion Certificate", which required providing evidence of your having attended a particular church/synagogue/mosque/etc for two years and a written letter from your priest/rabbi/imam/etc.

"OK, who did you think you were committing a hate crime against instead of Jews then?"

Beth worked as a doctor for years until a transphobe turned up. Now, she's had to leave her job, leave her home, move to the other side of the world and is still being hounded and harassed by the media and cult.

She did nothing but exist as trans in the orbit of Sandie Peggie.

The judge who refused Dr Beth Upton anonymity should never know another moments peace in their personal or professional life because that's exactly what they have unleashed on that poor woman whose only crime was being trans and existing

In my experience, the gays who were active in the gay rights movement support trans rights now.
The gays who stayed home and scolded the activists for stirring things up are the ones who are now trying to ditch trans people.

Amazing that it’s always the same three transphobic columnists, over and over and over again. Here, we have the lesbian JD Vance rewriting a history she was never part of.

Honestly, at this point any tobacco company CEO not planning major sales outlets *just* on the Southern side of the Irish border is engaging in professional neglect of their job.

Also, such an unrealistic responsibility to put on random shop staff. Estimating when someone's under 18 is one thing. Guessing when someone's under 42 come 2050 is quite another.

There will never be an "acceptable gay" or "acceptable trans" movement that works. The Mattachine Society tried that with gay people back in the 1950s, and they failed, because Rowling et al fundamentally disagree with people being LGBT+, no matter what type of LGBT+ they are.

I think he's going to make it to the local/devolved elections purely so he can take the blame for the disaster.
