Fairy Tales for Grown-Ups | British Library Fairy Tales have an older and darker past as stories for adults as well as the young. They were often sensual, bawdy, unflinchingly violent, sophisticated

This amazing online event is happening tomorrow, Tuesday, April 21st. Susanna Clarke, @amalelmohtar.com, Gregory Maguire and I will be talking about fairy tales, fairy lore, and fairy tale literature for the @britishlibrary.bsky.social. Please join us!

“Hey, Teenagers: Pay close attention to the books people try to ban. Then, make a beeline to read those books, if you can. Find out for yourself why those people want that book banned. Find out for yourself if they can be trusted to know what’s best for you.”

People should read.
I'm tired of people not reading.
Please, if you can, PLEASE, read! Read everything, but especially fiction! Read comics!
It will help you with empathy AND make you smarter.
Please, read.

The day I quit threads.

Rightwing political org joins threads. Algorithm shows me the first post. I block them. 2 hours later my entire feed is "I blocked these assholes" posts.
I was trying to curate my feed. meta just wanted me angry.

James Bembridge on X:
Hate is too weak a word for what I feel towards the NHS. I'd tear it down and salt the earth upon which it stood.

Lovely people, these Reform UK candidates for the upcoming election, and great to know they're on our side.

Who called it "AI theft" and not "six finger discount"?

The ai overview was what made me abandon Google.

I couldn't trust the results I was getting & I couldn't trust that the summaries further down were also not ai slop.

It repeatedly rephrased my query then made up contradictory, inaccurate and inconsistent answers to questions I hadn't even asked.

This is key to political understanding: austerity causes a rise in support for the far right.
BTW, austerity is *not over*, unless you accept the meaningless official definition. A meaningful definition is "a decline in public services caused by a shortfall in funding". catherinedevries.eu/NHS.pdf

I've no desire to spend the rest of my days struggling to rebuild a world that frankly never did a lot for me.
If they sound the alarm. I'm going to greet the light and attempt to leave an artistic blast shadow as commentary.

No matter how much of the paperwork was signed in Sharpie. Or who claims credit for it.

This is why NASA's mission is important.

Earth and Moon from DSCOVR NASA's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) aboard the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite captured this unique view of the Moon as it moved in front of the sunlit side of Earth last month. This view shows the fully illuminated “dark side” of the moon that is never visible from Earth. Ian Regan processed this version of the image to account for the Moon's motion. I hadn't seen this before. This is pretty remarkable.

“Nice bookstore. Is one of these a trick book?”
“How so?”
“Like, you pull it off the shelf and a hidden door opens.”
“Oh. Yes. All of them.”

WRT how you consume & enjoy media. You do you.

But there are big segments of fandoms, viewership and "reviewers" who unironically sound exactly like this.

It's deeply unserious.

How people engage with media is their business. You do you. etc.

Epilogues and prologue. Are not part of the main narrative, but they give it additional and sometimes essential context.

Declaring them "not part of the book" or the same thing as a foreword, afterword or authors note is wild.

Born 30th March 1930, actor John Astin. Sadly, the majority of the original cast of "The Addams Family" are no longer with us, but, happily John is still around. John Astin played Gomez Addams in the show from 1964 to 1966. He is 96 today. #JohnAstin #Gomez

Interesting fact, I always assumed it was because of the golden ratio 😳 but reality is far more interesting.

You could say that Rock n Roll was born 111 years ago today in Arkansas, but probably not where you'd think. Before there was a Chuck Berry or Little Richard, there was those who wanted to be like her.

Rosetta Nubin better known as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the godmother of Rock was born on this day

I often perform chores for the benefit of "the man".. I feed him. I wash his clothes. I pick up after him when he leaves a mess. I even peel his spuds.

It's me. I'm the man.

All times in GMT!

8:00am: Good Morning!
8:30am: Costume gloves with VileMods!
Vile is a handcam streamer, and I like costumes... so for this stream these worlds will collide. We'll be hand stitching costume gloves (yes with stretch fabric, we've got this!) and then decorating them. The idea is that this project could be useful for handcam streamers, vtubers and cosplayers! Plus since it will be hand stitched, no equipment needed!
12:00pm: Lunch Break
12:30pm: Making a Waistcoat with Zomboti!
One of my goals for this event is to make a 3 piece suit and Zomboti has very kindly agreed to join me in making a waistcoat for it! We'll be aiming for a formal waistcoat and following a free pattern so you can easily sew along if you like!
3:30pm: Afternoon snack
4:00pm Bob Ross Paint-along with Feral_Aeris and EmilyElements!
I love Bob Ross videos, but why do the paintings always have to go onto a canvas board? For this collab I am joined by very talented artists; Feral and Emily, and we'll be following a Bob Ross tutorial and painting onto the back of jackets!

I read Strata at some point around 1983. Dark Side of the Sun around the same time. Library finds that left an impression. I was formally introduced to Terry Pratchett and the Discworld in 1990 or 91.

It's basically a peanut butter cup made with premium ingredients.
It should tick all my boxes.
But it's just a sickly oversweet mess.
