Decision-making Governor Smith style

1 day ago 14 2 0 0

Also check out these two sentences from Rick Bell's column: "Premier Danielle Smith and her UCP government have made the decision. It will go to the Alberta legislature for debate this week."

Of course, we *did* have a referendum on this.

In 2021.

Ordered by the UCP government.

And Albertans voted 'No'.

The website is still up.

It says: "The results of the referendum are binding. Alberta will continue changing their clocks twice a year."

Spot on. Thanks.

Lunty's sole qualification is being an unquestioning and loyal UCP partisan who does nothing but Smith's bidding who was parachuted into Leduc-Beaumont. He is a junior MLA who can be counted on not to think for himself or express an ounce of independence from the Premier's Office

There is a lot of criticism of floor crossings to Liberals. I’m not a fan of it either, but it’s legal.

Partisan critics must be reminded that Danielle Smith holds a Canadian floor crossing record. For a Cabinet appointment promise, she led 9 Wildrose MLAs to cross to PCs.

I see that the Premier proposes MLA Brandon Lunty (who?) as chair of the #albertagerrymander committee.
Wikipedia fails to highlight any experience suggesting why he might be a suitable candidate.
Can we help by suggesting possible reasons?

Bill 30, s 4(6) Notice of designation of a project must be gazetted w/in 60 days;
Why not add & published the day of designation thro the usual online OiC announcement?
If the Bill can demand approvals w/in 120 days surely it can demand that an OiC be published on day 1.

The best news I've read in a long time.
Elections Alberta is demanding answers from the Alberta Prosperity Project on compliance with initiative petition financing rules - and doing so now rather than waiting until the petition papers are handed in.
Kudos Elections Alberta.

That gives insight to to what I saw as incoherence.

Starting to prepare an ABlawg post on Bill 30 the Expedited Project Approvals bill.
One of the things the minister may consider in designating a project follows below. Question, how on earth does a project respect provincial jurisdiction? Incoherent drafting.

Only US Votes Against Women’s Rights Document At UN Commission - Health Policy Watch President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock told the opening of CSW that the backlash against women's rights "feels as though we are forced to

For the first time in decades, consensus broke at the UN Commission on the Status of Women. The United States cast the lone “no” vote on a document aimed at improving justice systems for women and girls worldwide. Misogyny is the official policy of the US under Trump.

This story is a microcosm of what the UCP has become under Premier Danielle Smith's regime. @matthewblack.ca deserves the public's thanks for pursuing records that the UCP govt had absolutely no legal reason to withhold. Evidence of Smith's growing authoritarianism is on full display here.

Shaun Fluker predicted this on @ablawg.bsky.social, a must-read on the electoral commission report. A reminder that democratic rights under s 3 of the Charter are not subject to the notwithstanding clause. This is one instance where the UCP cannot try to avoid the courts.

I commend this well crafted and balanced speech to you. I'm proud that Senator Simons represents my province in the Red Chamber. And some interesting Alberta/Western Cdn history recounted here (Keegstra/Christie) that it is well worth being reminded of.

Stay tuned.

The latest UCP gimmick (today) to undermine the legitimacy of the electoral commission process in AB confirms that the only way to bring them into line is through the intervention of the Courts.
That's why Premier Smith is doing her level best to undermine the Courts.

This is a major line being crossed by Alberta's UCP government. Throwing out the work of an independent boundaries committee is authoritarian and extremely anti-democratic.

Elizabeth May: "I just read in The Guardian that the big oil and gas companies are making $30m [*an hour] because of the wars. So why are we deciding to get rid of the excise tax on gas instead of an excess profit tax on the companies that are raking in the dough due to war?"
