@alyankovic.bsky.social Please don't play at Ravinia again. Worst concert experience I've ever had. If you weren't in the pavilion, you literally couldn't see the stage and the screens were useless if you didn't get there 3-5 hours early. Left before you even came on it was so miserable.

Man, the clubs are really sorta ruining Independent Bookstore Day. They get in early and clear it them out. I was really hoping for that Indie Bookstore Day Paul Tremblay special edition of Horror Movie. At least the money isn’t going to Amazon.

Passing by Nella Larsen
A fantastic and quick read! While this was written in 1929, a lot of the subject matter within are still very relevant. #booksky📚💙 #nellalarsen #fiction #semiautobiographical #bookworm #booknerd

Federal judge orders Colorado district to return banned books to school libraries The order prohibits the school board from removing books “because the district disagrees with the views expressed therein or merely to further their preferred political or religious orthodoxy.”

Good news from Colorado: A U.S. District Judge ordered a school district to restore library books they banned by next week, prohibiting the district from further restrictions on access to books that the school board objects to politically.

Octavia Butler was told at a very young age by an aunt “Don’t write sci fi, no one will read it” so she didn’t. She didn’t write anything for decades and then realized she could write whatever she wanted.

True, but if you’re told in HS that “don’t write that, you’ll never be taken seriously” and then stopping isn’t necessarily a lack of thick skin, but of “I’m a kid and they are an adult.”

It makes me sad to think of all the potential great novels that were squashed because a writing teacher said “don’t write that, it’s genre fiction and it’ll never be taken seriously and won’t be published.”

I’ve heard so many stories about people in writing classes who were told “don’t write genre fiction” who then went on to write amazing sci-fi, horror, fantasy novels. The list keeps growing longer and longer!

It could lead me to a house with the name “No one has ever left this house alive” and I’d still walk in if there was a trail of free books.

If you find yourself reconsidering where to buy your books in light of Target ending DEI, don't forget your local independent bookstores! I'll happily spend a bit more, and wait a little longer for my pre-ordera #booksky #target

seeing the dumpster fire that was “keep politics out of booktok” taught me that reading isn’t enough. critical thinking needs to be taught, needs to be practiced. #booksky
