(I should be working on adorable polymer clay babbies, but also I’m on like Hour 50 of a moderate migraine, so I’m noodling about on low-impact projects that can be poked in 15 min intervals every hour or so.)

A rusty iron/pot-metal crab sitting atop a messy work table. Its front left claw was broken off decades ago, & a new claw made of black epoxy clay (atop white epoxy no longer visible) is being sculpted in its place.

Initial layer of firmly adhered to the metal, so I added another; should sand/dremel enough once it’s cured to blend in.

This stuff works so differently than polymer clay! Small patches are like wood putty, larger bits are more like taffy in the hot sun. For my 2nd/3rd practice it, not too bad.

I suppose I could layer more apoxie once this one has cured, before sanding/dremel-ing it into shape?

Color-matching it to look like rusty metal is gonna be a challenge too.

But I’ve been meaning to fix him for a decade now so “done is better than perfect” carries the day.

A small claw has been shaped out of light grey epoxy clay and affixed to its front left limb, where the original metal claw was broken off long ago. The effect is not unlike an actual crab that has lost its claw & not yet finished regrowing it (not sure if species other than Fiddler crabs do this).

Had some blended Apoxie left over after repairing scrollwork & cherubs on a vintage plaster mirror frame Mom inherited from her cousin, so made a claw for this broken iron crab an antique shop put in a curbside free box.

Bigger/accurate claws weren’t holding shape so “awkwardly regrown” it is.

Okay, I’ve taken a look at the extended forecast of mid-80s & have decided to turn off my heat*. Like actually go outside & turn the valves & everything.

Having done this, I expect the weather will return to low-50s almost immediately.
