This week I introduced AI to members of our Virology lab here in São Paulo. These slides present some fundamentals and concerns about Large Language Models (LLMs) at a very basic level.

Methods, Virology & More

And, the first substantive post went up this morning. Since I first learned about quantitative methods and statistics more than 50 years ago, fitting distributions to data has been an obstacle. That's the subject of this post. You can find it at

I'm looking for one or a few popularly rather than technically oriented books on Monte Carlo to help them learn and hopefully enchant them a bit. Any suggestions will be gratefully received. Nice to encounter old bird friends over here in a peaceful environment.

I was getting hundreds per day as well, but one day they magically disappeared, hopefully never to return. So, so lacking in talent most of them.

Frank Harrell’s book is a treasure. I have adopted a number of his practices, especially with projects that various people will be looking at and commenting on. They save hassle and embarrassment later on. My students (generally final year undergrads and Master’s level) struggle with it however.
