Maya’s Journey: A Story of Two Great-Grandmothers | Marcella White Campbell A debut picture book exploring Black and Jewish family history and the stories that connect us across generations.

Today is launch day for Maya’s Journey: A Story of Two Great-Grandmothers (Kalaniot Books), a story that grew out of years of tracing my family’s Black and Jewish American history and telling those stories to my kids. I’m so excited to share Martha Jean and Essie’s stories with you!

Philip Larkin’s this be the verse mangled into Ozymandias, the text reads

They Oz you up, your mandyias.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They give you vast and trunkless legs
A sunken shattered visage too.
But they were Ozzed up in their turn
By Mandyias upon the sand
Who half the time had wrinkled lips And half in sneering cold command.
Oz hands on mandyias to man.
Like mighty works atop a shelf Look on them early as you can
Ye mighty and despair yourself

It’s alright to cancel plans, it’s alright to flee into the desert after killing a man, it’s alright to witness god and accept your destiny as the liberator of the Israelites, it’s alright to unleash ten horrible plagues on all of Egypt until Pharaoh agrees to let you go. Do what you need to cope

Also, there are a billion reasons why parents choose to formula feed, and they shouldn't have to explain their reasoning or show their work. (not a criticism of the post, but I rarely see this take.)

This is Ozma of Oz - the legitimate ruler of Oz that the Wizard unseated! She is enchanted by the witch Mombi to live as a servant boy named Tip.

(Wish I could find an image from my childhood book, but like Escapade, my copy came from a gas station so i fear it has long since fallen apart)

won’t you celebrate with me won't you celebrate with me

“what did i see to be except myself?

i made it up

here on this bridge between

starshine and clay,

my one hand holding tight

my other hand; come celebrate

with me that everyday

something has tried to kill me

and has failed.” — Lucille Clifton

I think sometimes people see all the political posts on here and feel shy about posting different things but believe me when I say we have all read enough posts about bad shit happening and want your opinions on Avatar whales or whatever

And now you are only a few ingredients and ≈ 6 hours away from as many perfectly cooked marinated ramen eggs as you desire. This process is on infinite loop at our house.

No mention that Dorothy Parker was a Civil Right champion.

Or that Parker bequeathed her estate to MLK, and provided that upon his death, the estate would pass to the NAACP. The NAACP continues to benefit from her gift by licensing the use of her works.

Parker's ashes were in NAACP HQ for 30 yrs.

The more reading I've done on attention economy and neuroscience, warmer I've become to idea of 100% curating your experience of the world so you can focus on doing the work that matters most to you. We challenge each other to "engage" and "be engaged" but with... EVERYTHING. And that doesn't work

I so want Democrats to talk about immigration differently, & fear they're taking the wrong lesson from Trump getting Republicans to block the bipartisan border bill

Yes ofc it's hypocritical but that doesn't mean that bill should be passed; it means GOP never *actually cared about ~border security~

If you weren’t in law school > 20 years ago, you may not realize how earth shaking this is. Judge Luttig was the paragon of conservative judges, clerking for him was the surest way to wind up clerking for Scalia or Thomas. He’s obviously changed a lot in retirement but this is still utterly unreal.

It is pretty ironic that a substantial part of the political attack on the Harris/Walz ticket is that they are good parents who love and accept their children

I Shouldn’t Have to Dehumanize My Son to Get Him Support

Somehow the phrase “moderate intellectual disability” has slipped into my sons state legal documents. That structure has benefits. It is not an accurate way to describe my son. To fix it means I’m going to speak about his lacks. I wrote about this some years back.

Infamous rejection letter from Emory Med School from 1959, rejecting an applicant solely bc the school was "not authorized to consider for admission a member of the Negro race."

At least they sent back the $5.00 application fee, along with any sense of decency or honor.

I'm not going to repost Megyn Kelly's toxic "why are Black women celebrating why they went to HBCUs" tweet, bc ... why?

I'll just repost this instead.

In case anyone had to wonder why HBCUs had to exist in the first place. And should be celebrated for what they opposed.

Are Black voters really leaving Democrats in the dust? Black people are less likely to identify as Democrats than in the past. But Black voters remain the most loyal Democratic constituency.

this is very interesting. declining democratic support among black americans is mostly concentrated among nonvoters goodauthority.org/news/are-bla...

A key pillar of the trans panic has been that people’s “intuitive” reactions should govern how others are treated in public space and I think it’s important we reject this wholesale.

Ten years ago my meds melted in the car while I was running another errand and insurance refused to replace them. This has been coming down the line for a long time.
