A hegemony affirms a putative world where any culture or groups of people it deems lesser are inherently, intrinsically morally deficient, that kind of rhetoric is self-sufficient.

You can dispute when someone gets called a non human, when you are robbed of sapience its simpler to dismiss as bigotry, but orientalism unpacks a more sophisticated lie, you arent a barbarian, youre a misogynist, you arent backwards, youre a predator. How are you supposed to challenge that?

Having read Orientalism, you come to realize that othering is effective because othered people dont get called things that are dehumanizing, they get called things that push them outside the circle of humanity.

I've been more or less quiet on this platform specifically bc fuckass Bsky doesn't seem receptive to things like this especially coming from brown people like me
