Spending a rainy Maine day with the SCMS conference program and sharing sessions related to the DH and Videographic Criticism SIG. Let me know in the comments if you have a panel or presentation I should add. #SCMS26
Heads up SCMSers! The annual DH and Videographic Criticism SIG meeting is this Friday, Dec 5 from 11-12 CST. Keep an eye on your inbox tomorrow for instructions about how to join the Zoom session. Come hang with us - we know when to use video instead of writing and we can sing (sort of)! #SCMS26
Camera movement has existed longer than we might think, with pans becoming common in the 1900s.
Early filmmakers also simulated movement. This 1908 fairy tale THE GRATEFUL LITTLE MICE gives the illusion of a zoom by pulling the performers and prop book toward the camera. It's nearly seamless.
I think Bogost nailed the issues in this piece.

My #Yale colleague Harlan Krumholz explains why the cuts to indirect costs are a disaster for biomedical research in the United States. Want to do something about it? I'll list those who have to hear from us below. Share, recruit friends and family to help. 1/ www.statnews.com/2025/02/08/n....
There are, of course, plenty of other ways to make a difference, including the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. Please take a few moments out of your day to support one or more of these efforts - even a small donation can help make a big difference.
4) Beloved pets have been harmed and/or need shelter while their humans seek housing. The Pasadena Humane Society has taken in hundreds of animals since the wildfires started and anticipates the arrival of many more. You can support their efforts by donating here: pasadenahumane.org/give/donate/
3) The foundation associated with Airbnb, airbnb.org, is partnering with 211 LA, which offers free housing in Los Angeles County, to make temporary housing available to those displaced by the wildfires. You can support that effort by donating to airbnb.org via PayPal here: bit.ly/3WcbjIo
2) World Central Kitchen (WCK) is providing meals to first responders and families in need. You can support its efforts by making a donation here: wck.org
1) The Wildlife Recovery Fund administered by the California Community Foundation (CFF) targets underserved, hard-to-reach communities, advancing long-term recovery efforts for Californians who need it most. You can support that effort by contributing here: bit.ly/424egyj

Many of us have dear family and friends whose lives have been dramatically affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles. If you’re wondering how you can support the urgent recovery efforts underway there, please consider contributing to any or all of the following organizations.
Happy Children-Return-to-School Day to all who celebrate! Marking the occasion with a leisurely perusal of the @scmstudies.bsky.social conference program and noting all the videographic panels. Did I miss any? #scms25
Congratulations, Barbara! Love this video essay and so glad it got the recognition it deserved.
@evelynkreutzer.bsky.social mentioned this to me. It looks great! Is there going to be an event? Might be a good excuse for a quick trip to NYC…
We made a thing! The videographic cluster “The Personal Mediascape in the Age of Videographic Heterotopias” has just gone live over on ASAP/Review. Happy watching and reading! asapjournal.com/cluster/the-...
