“This decision directly contradicts the NASW Code of Ethics, which prioritizes client well-being, cultural competence, and the fight against oppression and discrimination,” the organization said in a statement.
In her dissent, Justice Jackson warned that the ruling could have far-reaching and dangerous consequences. NASW agreed.
SCOTUS ruled in Chiles v. Salazar, reversing lower court rulings. This decision carries significant implications for social workers, particularly in relation to ethical practice, client care, LGBTQIA+ protections, and the regulation of mental health services.
