I think they would understand each other most, as well as to some extent, the worlds they come from. Mel magic being banned in Piltover, Xin with his time as a reckoner in Noxus. And if they joined forces, they might actually be able to make a difference. They end up changing each other as well.

Though the only time they truly would begin to have any faith in each other is when they see the nuanced nature of their situations. Xin learns Mel wants to change Noxus, & the nature of her compassionate heart. Mel learns Xin does not hate mages, that he they both want a better world.

The duplicity of their nature and beliefs. Xin hating Mel because she is from Noxus, the country he experienced such pain because of. And Mel hating Xin because of the way Demacia treats mages. The both of them on the front lines fighting one another.

Thinking about enemies to lovers goldenspear again...
