The Devils by Joe Abercrombie @joeabercrombie.com is a wickedly dark, action-packed fantasy, and we are ecstatic to have it as our May 2025 GSFF pick.

This brutal, brilliantly paced novel blends sharp wit, relentless violence, and unexpected heart, creating a tale as hilarious as it is harrowing.

While the situation is ongoing, can I suggest you can’t and you shouldn’t … and the time you have should be spent on self-care until things have settled down a little? Because emergency, and crisis, need your energy and your creativity isn’t helped by trying to work through something so stressful xx

Thought I'd demystify publishing language for debuts.

'Structural edit' = rewrite your book
'Line edit' = all these sentences are wrong
'Copy edit' = your chronology is wrong
'Proof read' = there are still loads of errors
'Second proof read' = how the hell is your punctuation still up the spout?

Cover of Dreams & Shadows by C. Robert Cargill, and damn if we don't have a lot going on here, and believe me, this isn't HALF of what's in this book. It looks like Hieronymus Bosch's first draft for an SNL Stefon sketch.
Hokay, here we go.
Cover is a dark blue background with text and images a white-tinted-blue. Name and title are in the center of the book with the text
A dark place to be...
Between them, so that's ominous right there.
On top, we got:
A sleeping angel (not weeping, sorry to disappoint Whovians)
A telescoping matryoshka doll of heads, 4 deep.
A sexy nude female fairy posing on her stomach while a puppet in cowboy boots walks on her back.
Frog eyes above a zipper mouth with a grasping right hand next to it.
An eye with lid, but there's a clawed hand coming out of the lid
A skeleton wearing a jacket kissing a woman with an anchor tattoo on her left arm and a crazy straw coming out of her head.
Nude ballerina
Person lifting a giant head mask off their normal sized head.
Nude woman looking over her left shoulder sitting in a flower
More eyes
Puppet with half it's face melted and a large left hand.
Goat with a hummingbird tongue.
Cat's eyes - Cheshire cat style.
Bottom half
Punk bird man drinking from a bottle
Woman wearing a sun dress with a purse ( DEFINITELY a tourist for this cover!)
Middle finger
Winged cyote
Six misshapen tiny puppets with cowboy hats
Another winged fairy
The invisible man, smoking something rolled, except his cowboy hat, hair and hand flipping the bird fist-style are visible.
Finally, a coyote with human arms and legs is bent over, grabbing a cane, and smiling with his tongue hanging out, so you know he's about to, or has just finished starting shit.
...and I believe none of the protagonists are on the cover.
Phew.

More Weapons - Joe Abercrombie Safe to say the UK is well served with signed and limited and special content for The Devils, but I would HATE for my valued brethren across the pond in the USA to feel left out, so in devilish collab...

Delighted to announce that you can preorder signed US hardcovers of The Devils, along with holy relics based on the internal art from Joel Daniel Phillips, at Lit Escalates. joeabercrombie.com/more-weapons/

I want one of those "surprise you have magical abilities" young adult books but about a full grown adult. A coming-of-middle-age tale. On his 40th birthday he finds out he's a wizard and is like, "cool but I can't really go to boarding school right now, I've used most of my vacation days already."

Agree with everything in this thread and he is *also* incredible in Rings of Power. Utterly different character also totally nails it. And in Penny Dreadful. And in Our Flag Means Death.

In the university English department where I studied for my undergrad degree, Sir Gawain & the Green Knight was always the last text before Christmas in the 1st year. It is 100% a Christmas story, so fill your festive boots

Is it a coincidence that the storm warning sounded at the precise moment @joeabercrombie.com was opening an envelope of The Devils pins?
