I may, for once, beat you to the end of a book. But only cos you haven't started it.

This is where Hinduism actually cracked the code, yes the gods have portfolios but they also have overlaps and mediating fights over jurisdiction was basically Indra's full time job as king of the devas
The norse gods meanwhile are just a bunch of guys who occasionally do a little light part time work. Thor's god of thunder, sure. But mostly he's just in fight clubs with giants and doing drag.
leopard seals are basically nature being like fuck it, what if one animal got every weapon
the only picture you'll ever need when explaining "sea lions are what happened when bears decided they wanted to play in the ocean as a full time job"
I definitely keep a safe distance!
Maybe it was trying to lull you into a false sense of security....?
"Did you know that the politician was friends with a nonce when you appointed him?" is not a question that should ever be answered with "which one"
I can only imagine!!
I LOVE THEM
A heron in front of some reeds by a pond, with its hungry beak open, poking out its hungry tongue. It's facing left, which means it's not trying to eat you. Not yet. But you're next. Oh, so soon, you will be next.
The dinosaurs did not die out. They walk among us. And they are hungry.
NONE MORE GOTH!
This is a wonderful source for cultural history!
Recently I delved into the cultural history of the mirror and found this great blog on this image of Marcia from Giovanni Boccaccio’s book, De Claris Mulieribus (Concerning Famous Women, ca. 1404).

AMAZING!
Novelty publishing has always been with us. But I bet 1510 germany paper engineers didn't have to deal with 2020s rising paper costs. (Actually I have no idea about the economy of 1510 germany, now I want to go down a rabbithole...but have work to do)
Can you help Soad and Omar today? @lizardry.bsky.social is sharing her message because Soad keeps getting her account closed on here.
I'm coming from the pov that an english lit degree DID ruin reading for me for a while! But for different reasons than my hype allergy (I hated critical theory, it turned out.) I still feel like the hype can make a book feel less-than but...I'm also enjoying the adrenalin of it!
@louiestowell.bsky.social this would be my Friday good news but is so exciting I couldn’t wait ;)
Hurrah!
Depends on where the hype wave is. I too tend to avoid books that are getting rave reviews from seemingly everyone. If I've already started or perhaps have a physical copy I'll read it. Otherwise I'm waiting to let expectations die down. Disappointment from hype results is my not wanting to read.
YES that's also me re hype! I've just realised I ALSO enjoy being in the eye of the storm. But I think perhaps long term I will return to my old ways of hype dodging. EG I didn't read Piranesi for about 4 years. I still haven't read Orbital.
Everyone: Just WAIT til you get to chapter 29!
Me: *wails in chapter 10*
Ok I'm closer now but still.
I managed to read Katabasis quickly alongside others too cos I happened to be very free but generally I need weeks to read a book not days like some people!
For years I didn't read "the hot books everyone else was reading" cos I was worried it would spoil my enjoyment and, instead, opted to wait a few years. But I'm now reading Yesteryear at the same time as everyone and the rush! But also the panic of being a slow reader and not able to fully discuss!
oh how I love the slough house books. Gobbled them up so fast!
Justice for susan!
So, I'm really enjoying it but someone said something happens in about 2 chapters time from where I am now that will make me hate it so....let's see!
