and finally takes a shower before hunting down a cuppa.
Gaz finds him in the mess.
"Have you heard?"
"I just got back from fifteen days in the devil's arsehole, Garrick, so no."
"Tav's been discharged." he looks troubled, but before Ghost can ask, he adds, "Dishonourably." //
(Lump in his throat, Ghost redirected, "finish up or you'll be late.")
With a wave and a too-bright smile, Soap gave his last farewell and headed for his transport.

Three months later, Ghost returns from weeks of recon in the bloody fucking desert. He debriefs, beats the sand out of his gear, +
("Canna make any promises, LT."
"I'm serious, Johnny."
Soap had looked at him then, studied him for a moment before grinning. "So ye /do/ like me!"
Unable to help himself, Ghost huffed a small laugh, "I like you alive."
"Startin ta think tha means the same thing," his smile softened, eyes sad. +
(As Soap finished cleaning out his room, Ghost kept him company. He didn't say much then either, it was better to let Soap ramble away his anxiety.
It wasn't until just before they were expected on the tarmac that Ghost said his piece. Told his— not his anymore— sergeant not to do anything stupid.+
When the time comes for Soap to ship out to meet his new squad, the 141 see him off.
He shakes each of their hands, thanks them. Gaz tells him to shut it, calls him an idiot as he pulls him into a hug.
Ghost is quiet, but Price knows its only because there's an audience. +
Gaz is a different story, bursting into Price's office the next day demanding to know what the hell he's thinking giving Tav the boot.
With a mild warning, he reminds the sergeant that it's Price's duty to do what's best for his team. Gaz will just have to accept his decision.
It's for the best. +
Seeing the shine dim in the lad's eyes is enough to know he failed.
Price expected anger, arguing, at the very least the question of "why?"— but Soap does none of that.
Instead, he just smiles and nods, says he understands, and thanks the captain for the honour of getting to be part of the 141. +
Truth is, he'd already decided. Months ago, when he first noticed Ghost's pining. (Poor bastard took long enough to figure that out, didn't he.)
When he finally pulls Soap into his office, Price tries to make it abundantly clear that the sudden transfer isn't because of anything he's done. +
The captain's not particularly happy about it, but he can't say he's surprised. It's far from subtle, the affection Ghost has for their resident Scot. Painfully obvious, really.
But now Price has a decision to make— he can't send them out in the field together anymore. Only one of them can stay. +
#Ghoap angst where as soon as he realises he's emotionally compromised, Ghost goes to Price.
Admitting it aloud is about as pleasant as pulling his own bloody teeth; but he does it anyway. He's doing the responsible thing– the /right/ thing.
So he leaves it in Price's hands. +
