This is both a welcomed move by @bostonu.bsky.social and thickens the plot, by putting the question in bold relief: who gets to decide university speech?

“The playbook of trying to wait out any type of backlash and then addressing it later on has not been working for students.”

Browsing comments about campus speech underscores need for more civics education. Hard to grasp logic behind arguments such as: if a person puts up a flag in a random office window, the admin must put up all other possible flags? What?!
Also the extremely slippery slope of “only US flags!”.
Boston University is pausing its removal of Pride flags from office windows amid a national backlash over its controversial free expression policy, President Melissa Gilliam announced.
An important case study. As much as I oppose these flags, & an argument can be made that cop flags embody threats to brown & black folks & shouldn’t be protected speech, I come down on them having the right to express these views. Censoring bad ideas gives them O2.

@bostonu.bsky.social see how admins can lead with courage and principle rather than fear?

Dorm window sign at UMass Amherst says “Fucking Nazis you are not welcome here”
Apparently some Nazis were concerned about this blatantly anti-Nazi sign at UMass Amherst:
“RIP Harambe” in a Syracuse U dorm window. Harambe was a gorilla who was shot and killed to protect a 3-yr old who fell into his cage at the Cincinnati Zoo.

Dorm window sign at OSU says “My rights your policies”, next to another window with the Ohio state flag
Love this one from Ohio State U:
My “Free Rumeysa” office window sign of Spring, 2025
My “Divest” from fossil fuels office window sign of 2013. Note this photo is copyrighted by BU and was publicized by BU in its own Bostonia magazine.
My progress pride flag of spring 2026
Here are a few signs I’ve put in my campus window over the years. How about you?
BU has declared every first Thursday TERRIER SPIRIT DAY.
My fellow BU AAUP members are certainly making me #ProudToBU
BU AAUP pins read:
“No austerity without transparency!“
+
“Support academic freedom and CGS rights to hire its faculty!”
+
“CAS faculty say protest graduate programs!”
@bostonu.bsky.social speech police can’t silence freedom. Try it and we’ll multiply further.

“We’re less draconian” - @bostonu.bsky.social policy is driven not by our highest aspirations but by fear of the worst actions.

Boston U's AAUP uncovers a campaign of censorship on campus. A series. dailyfreepress.com/03/30/21/219...
Forty years ago, and again today, Boston University finds itself on the wrong side of Massachusetts law and history when it silences student and faculty dissent.

A range of new pride & nods to pride flags & window displays in these 4 photos
Hopefully @bostonu.bsky.social realizes there’s no going back now.
It’s almost funny watching maga tie themselves up in knots about which signs & flags they’ve decided can be displayed and which not.
@bostonu.bsky.social is finding out what shared governance looks like
A courageous call to action by Prof. Snyder-Cappione. We are at a tipping point which @bostonu.bsky.social affiliates & alums can, by signing the petition herein, help turn into a landslide:

“As frustrating and disappointing as it is, I have never felt more hopeful about the kind of awakening that’s happening on campus, where faculty and students and staff are saying ‘who’s making the rules here?’ and ‘what about our voices?’”
dailyfreepress.com/03/25/21/218...
“Try to silence a message of inclusion, and the backlash can be louder than the flags themselves.”

Deforestation is tree neutral.
Depopulation is population neutral.
Etc.
But I’m glad you are on campus, Nathan, with a zeal to debunk, because when it comes to bunk one should never be neutral in opposition to it.

@bostonu.bsky.social keeps insisting on calling its no signs policy “content neutral”. But there’s no content.
That’s like saying everyone gets nothing, equally. It’s trivial & meaningless.
Thank you. So proud of profs speaking up in this new McCarthyite era. Appreciate you and @nathanpboston.bsky.social

The kraken flag, up today & since 10/25, for example, is closer to the pride flag removed at the WGS office than either of the two other pride flags removed. The “personal outreach” was clearly based on sign content.
