Amazing writing from Jennifer Horgan”: Angry men's blockades stopped my mother being with her dying brother-in-law last week. She was not the only vulnerable person whose needs were trampled on” #speirgorm

Oil companies are making $30m an hour in windfall profits. The Irish taxpayer is supporting oil exposed businesses with 3/4 of a billion € to avert disaster for just four months.
How do we avert future crises completely?

Another in a very long line of wake up calls.
And from Asif Kapadia. He is such a brilliant documentary filmmaker.
Exactly! (I didn’t love The Wire, could see why other people might, felt like I’d failed a high end TV exam…)
I admire it and I can see why her reputation has revived but it doesn’t zing with me the way that it clearly does with other people.
Presumably there will be a package of reliefs for people who are out of pocket from booking hotels and transport and other costs to attend these ceremonies right?
And the protesters will support this because those are mostly working people right?
Shameful stuff from these “protestors”. Consider donating to msoe.ie/donate/ to show your support and to help feed the homeless in Dublin
Worth a repost given the times we’re in
Learning today that its middle class to use a ~€500 bicycle but working class to own multiple ~€20'000 hauliers
I might not have the regular Irish Times column that Steen has, but I do have quite a bit more than a few anecdotes to back up what I say. Maria Steen thinks the #genderPayGap is a myth but that is a hopelessly basic and naive take. Here is why.

Not one person who is against the fuel blockade, missing a crucial hospital appointment, unable to get to or from work or school vox popped on the 9 o clock news. Not a single vox pop with a fire fighter or paramedic prevented from doing their jobs. #balance #speirgorm
Just worth saying, for absolutely legal clarity: the government does not have the legal prerogative to abolish carbon tax in its entirety. Carbon tax is a form of excise, and EU directives require excise on diesel to be a minimum of 33c per litre. (1/2)
Not a fair fight!
Poor baroness. Utterly unsuccessful in her attempts to solve a problem like Maria.

Will you help us report by filling out a short survey? If you're a journalist working in Ireland, we're curious what you're using AI for (if anything), and what you think about that.
Woody Brown is non-speaking, autistic and a brilliant new novelist. I interviewed him, and he's bloody amazing. Would be great if you could share

Another new record for people living in emergency accommodation, as of the end of February 2026. The overall number includes 5,457 children, and is up 12.5% in a year.

I remain unconvinced that listening to a litany of one murder after another really leaves me better informed, whether that’s on the six o clock news or a true-crime podcast. Or the hair salon where the stylists would regale us with “guess who got stabbed” updates in between an admittedly good cut.
Sorry, I think we all need one of those.
Good yarn here for those who like secrecy, public records and NI politics #speirgorm
Across the city, parents snatch their kids out of the way of red-light-breaking drivers. Despite years of talk, a promised national strategy on red-light cameras is yet to be published – let alone implemented.
The GCSE definition of good writing is horrible - Hemingway would fail it for sure, not enough fronted adverbials.
Grammar schools are a big aspect of this - a lot of them barely take any SEND pupils
Finally got around to watching Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch which is 100% committed to its arch and pretentious imaginary world and naturally enough I loved it.
Francophones and people with half decent French, how would you say “Potemkin village” in French? Or is there a phrase that would convey a similar meaning?
