So good! Always go to the Florence concert.

Went to church with @infraredflower.bsky.social tonight (a Florence concert).
One of the worst byproducts of AI coding is these PR descriptions that are out of control. Iโm wading through LinkedIn-speak to understand what the PR actually means to me.
a screenshot of the "New Bestsellers" list from Substack, with Andrew Tate in the #1 position
Hey, look at Substack promoting Andrew Tate as the #1 new bestseller. The company's amoral leadership & backers will platform anyone, even ludicrously toxic rapists & human traffickers.
I trust journalists way more than cops and courts to investigate sexual violence allegations. When a thoroughly reported journalistic investigation comes out, like the ones about Eric Swalwell, Iโve seen enough. If you havenโt done this work you may be unaware of how much goes into it.

Anyone else feel this? All of the making-fun-of-AI emojis at work are existing emojis with extra fingers. Real people have extra fingers and stunted ones and Iโm sure theyโve been made fun of a lot :/
Omg
Or the AI prompt mines apparently? ๐ Iโm still confused about my feelings and thoughts on the transition happening. It was something I was going to sort out on leave but I didnโt.
Back to the bit mines today!!!
Thank you!

At last, a chance to repost my favourite ever font-related controversy with alt-text, now that Calibri is back in the news.
Possibly unpopular opinion but I think tenure should be revokable when you express bigotry toward the immutable characteristics of part of your student body. Such as saying women are naturally not as good at science and engineering. How many young women students has he harmed since saying that?
If women are underrepresented in STEM, it's at least partly because men like this offer mentoring, then embarrass themselves by assuming their mentees must be into them, then decide the best solution is to cut ties, which sends the signal to other faculty that the mentee must not be good enough.
It got overshadowed by the pipeline news, but NYSโs deal to allow Greenidge Generation to keep operating an upstate gas plant *for the sole purpose of mining bitcoin* might be almost as big of a reversal gothamist.com/news/upstate...
saw this clip of the NYC mayor debate and i had tears in my eyes, perhaps the most insane section of any debate ever
We for sure just hit 150 on the M train going under the East River. Wheels not touching the tracks.
Part of a page from 'The Cycling World Illustrated', 26 August 1896. It includes photos of a tricycle for collecting cats (complete with uniformed driver) and the Cats' Infirmary, Hampstead (a pen of cats of varying sizes in someone's house, one of the cats is being cuddled by what appears to be the tricycle driver). The accompanying text reads: "A philanthropic lady in the North of London has established an infirmary for cats. On receipt of a postcard she will send for the ailing animal, the tricycle which collects them being provided with a box resting on springs to avoid all jarring and jolting. The cats are carefully tended at the infirmary, where their quarters and most comfortable, and when cured are returned to their owners, no charge being made."

Pop a card in the London post in 1896, & a chauffeur driven tricycle would collect your pet for care & cure, providing a smooth springed ride to the Hampstead infirmary

Alt text: A man in camouflage clothing and a face covering sits inside a gray Jeep, pointing a weapon out of the open driver-side window. The gun is aimed directly at the camera. The man wears gloves and a dark cap, and his eyes are visible above the mask. The vehicleโs door and side mirror are wet with raindrops.

The language of non-consent around AI is really telling. "It's too late to be scared." "It's here whether we want it or not." "You'll have to learn to work with it." "You can't fight the inevitable."
All just variations of "you're not allowed to say no." Creepy technology made by creepy people.

This podcast ep is a good overview of how the recent Republican bill affected climate policy and which parts of the IRA it repealed: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s... repubs have a wind and solar vendetta (they almost *added* a tax to them!), but luckily seem okay with nuclear.
Itโs been great! For some reason linen seems extra discounted.
