Only one of two unions is striking, which is unusual.

Went to the pub tonight and there was a sort of generic pub covers band and they were pretty good actually. They were playing what you’d expect and some unexpecteds. Then they asked for requests and someone said oasis and they said basically fuck off. I liked that bit best.

Again, I agree with you.

I don't disagree.

However, I do think at the time the general attitude to sending a sleazy piece of shit to cozy up to Trump et al was more of an ambivalent shrug...

Really? Whether you agree with it is a different question, but it's quite obvious why he was chosen to be the ambassador to Trump..

That's absolutely accurate and fair. Both need to be resolved, but I personally felt the need to make a case against a slightly reductive argument that was compressing multiple issues together.

I'm not sure density is the only answer. Paris has unmatched density, but a huge doughnut problem.

It's not just price. The suburban commuter belt has always had its share of higher earners. The ones that work in the city train into Waterloo, some of those in other industries earn enough to drive in and out. Lumping their car use in with those who drive 1/2 mile to the gym is flawed.

If you had to be at work for a 7am start would you trust that 5.50 train? Does it always run reliably?

Let's flip your answer on its head - if it isn't viable to run a wider public transport service then a certain amount of private car use has to be inevitable.

Yes, but I think timeframe is important. When I have to drive I'm looking at the other people on the road with me, in the early morning I think half are trades/contractors who start earlier or have to bring tools, getting them onto trains could be an easy win.

Perhaps somewhat, but not all those suburban commuters will just move to the centre.

Widening the effective commuter travel window seems to me one of the cheapest/easiest way to directly reduce the number of cars incredibly quickly.

Firstly, you're right about other cities, secondly, that kind of difference, og rail/metro is almost semantics, but yes. To what I was saying, I feel a prime example of public transport whenever possible, but underserved..

If I start at 9am and finish at 1am but can't easily get home I'm forced to drive.

2 weeks ago 1 0 1 0

Sure, but there's a problem for people who have to get in for say, a 7am start. That's a huge amount of construction contractors, arts, hospitality... I work in events, live in Surrey walking distance of a v. well connected station, I still have to drive far more often than I want to.

The biggest single anti-car change London could make is improving frequency, and more importantly, reliability of public transport for the doughnut. That's overground rail, not trams.
