Speaker Johnson is trying to get both Republicans and Democrats to go along with a new ploy to ram through a FISA reauthorization. After his dirty trick to sneak this through last week failed, no Democrat or reform-minded Republican should trust him.

FYI, LAST NIGHT: In a rushed after-midnight procedural vote, the House failed to move ahead with an extension of #FISA #Section702 without meaningful privacy reforms. apnews.com/article/cong...
Four Democrats voted with the GOP on reauthorizing a little-known law that lets the government sidestep the Constitution and spy on US citizens.
If you’re represented by Gluesenkamp Perez, Golden, Gottheimer, or Suozzi, ask them why they’re siding with the Trump regime on government surveillance.
SHAME!
Dems @golden.house.gov, Josh Gottheimer & @gluesenkampperez.house.gov voted for Speaker Johnson’s scheme to make it easier for Trump to use FISA data to prosecute Americans.
And all of them, plus @tomsuozzi.bsky.social, voted with Republicans to try and ram FISA through w/o any reforms.
ICYMI (and they hope you did) congressional leaders tried to push through more spying powers in the dark of night.
They FAILED thanks in no small part to groups like @freepress.bsky.social @demandprogress.bsky.social @pogo.org @aclu.org @cdt.org @brennancenter.org @aaaj-aajc.bsky.social
Vital @demandprogress.bsky.social explainer on false claims of going dark on #FISA #Section702.
These pressure tactics are common for the intelligence community under every president.
But hey Democrats: I think **maybe** this Trump guy is lying to you again. 🤔

As @wyden.senate.gov would tell you -- with experts at @brennancenter.org @cdt.org @demandprogress.bsky.social @pogo.org and @aclu.org -- Mike Johnson's "deal" actually broadens the use of 702 data for standard criminal cases, and does nothing to stop backdoor searches. It's a fake warrant. Vote NO.
The House punted on FISA 702 reauthorization, extending the law til just April 30
That means there's still time to tell Congress to vote NO on any Section 702 reauthorization bill that doesn't include real privacy protections for Americans

In a dramatic scene that unfolded in the wee hours this morning, members of the House defeated a ploy by the administration and Speaker Johnson to ram through a 5-year reauthorization of FISA Section 702. Here’s what happened, and what will/should happen next. 1/20
WE WON on FISA! For now…
The House just failed to pass Speaker Johnson’s deceitful scheme to make it easier for the government to weaponize FISA against Americans. But why was Dem Jim Himes caught talking with Johnson right before the vote? The people deserve to know.
RIGHT NOW, in the dead of night, House Republicans are ramming through a deceitful FISA proposal that weakens Americans’ privacy rights.
The proposal won’t create any new prohibitions on FISA and it actually makes it easier for the government to use this data against Americans.
Dem @golden.house.gov voted with Republicans to sink an Iran war powers resolution, which failed in a 213-214 vote.
Dem leaders could’ve forced this vote weeks ago when they possibly had more support but waited until after Trump escalated.
What’s motivating them: strategy or politics?
The House was supposed to start voting on a renewal of FISA w/o any privacy reforms right now. But that’s been postponed because Republicans, Democrats & independents put aside partisan politics and are fighting for the shared cause of protecting American’s privacy rights.

Today, 38 civil society groups applauded @repespaillat.bsky.social, @meng.house.gov, @repcasar.bsky.social & 50 other members of Congress for supporting needed privacy reforms to FISA.

In today's Connecticut Post, Demand Progress Action & @fightforthefuture.org placed an ad asking why Dem Rep. Jim Himes is doing Trump & Stephen Miller's bidding by trying to get Democrats to support renewing FISA with no privacy reforms.
PRIVACY NEWS: Shocking report from @charliesavage.bsky.social @nytimes.com: Once again intel agencies were caught using a “filter” system to run FISA 702 queries for Americans’ communications without logging them as queries.
This has major implications for compliance with the law and misconduct...
Donald Trump and Stephen Miller want Congress to renew an invasive government surveillance program without any privacy reforms. Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) is trying to deliver Democratic votes to do just that.

Jim Himes claimed in town halls that the US doesn't buy commercial data from data brokers. This is untrue; the NSA disclosed this years ago. That's one of several misleading claims from Himes as he tries to sell an extension of warrantless spying. @jamesjbaratta.bsky.social reports.
Donald Trump & Stephen Miller want Congress to renew their FISA spying powers without any privacy reforms.
Top House Intel Dem Jim Himes is trying to get Democrats to give them what they want, saying that we should trust them to oversee themselves and not abuse their power 🤔
