Oh yuck, that is pretty dreadful, I didn't realise you had a specific site in mind!
(I'd still regard the numbers as highly dubious for all the same reasons I stated when I *didn't* know which site you were talking about!)

I think we may have been talking past each other; which site are you referring to here?
I was talking generally - about my site and my experience with 'user' counts, and the tendency of sites to inflate numbers for advertising revenue. But it sounds as if you had something more specific in mind?
Whoa, not sure what you think I'm trying to justify here? My site still exists but it's had virtually no updates in 20 years!
My point was just related to the general unreliability of site traffic numbers - made a lot worse by the tendency of commercial sites to use numbers to justify ad fees.
No, the important thing is what's being counted. This is all back of an envelope calculation - but these bots and crawlers may have made up 90% of my 'visitors', but they would systematically index *every single page on the site*.
So ~90% of individual visitors - but maybe 99.9% of page accesses.
It's an exceedingly good question.
I ran my own webserver for many years - an extremely obscure and specialised webserver. I got a *huge* amount of 'views' from bots and crawlers - I'd say less than 10% of my 'views' were humans. And this was ~20 years ago! Much worse now I'd wager.
Eh use the right hardware and you could spend five weeks figuring out how to configure the RAIDs (and I did)
Oh I have one of those! It works too!
If Bang & Olufsen had ever got into the computer business, this is what it would have looked like.
FYSA a right-wing government has just banned dog racing in Aotearoa New Zealand - and horse racing is in many people's sights next.
Not at all sure that's true. Or, it may be a regional/country specific thing.
Our beds are oriented first and foremost so they're as far as possible from falling object hazards in case of earthquake, and that's not uncommon anywhere large earthquakes can happen.
Location map showing the North Island of New Zealand and Raoul Island to the north. The magenta box is the location of the recent sequence of earthquakes.
Plot showing the number of earthquakes and magnitudes over time. The sequence started during the first half of March, quieted down in late-March, and picked up again in early-April.
Since early-March there has been an interesting sequence of larger earthquakes happening about halfway between Raoul Island and the North Island of New Zealand. They went on for a couple weeks in March, quieted down for a couple weeks, and then picked up again in early-April. 🧪
one of the hardest science topics is explaining to a modern person that in the 1800s geologists were more popular than streamers are today books exploring topics like the history of a rock were doing multimillion print runs, & guys giving talks on igneous vs metamorphic were filling sports stadiums
I'll have a look - I'm in the IBMi Discord with the handle 'corestore' and there's a lot of activity - discord.com/channels/728...
Canada got that long ago; when I was in Canada last year, the attitude towards their southern neighbours was unmistakable in the liquor stores:
Here you go - a couple of System/3s!
Ahh I have at least one of everything - System/3, System/32, System/34, System/36, & System/38.
I should probably also have therapy or something, but here we are.
Is there any other kind?!
AS/400 retrocomputing enthusiasts have been waiting a LONG time for an implementation compatible with the AS/400's unique and peculiar flavour of SCSI; finally, we have one!
A BlueSCSI Ultra Wide SCSI disk emulator being shoehorned into an AS/400 drive carrier; the SCSI cable is connected, the power cable is a work in progress
@bluescsi.com AS/400 business is in hand... also have met @yyzkevin.com on Discord
The Artemis II landing module splashing down in the ocean. Three large parachutes are attached, all round with red and white stripes.
A bunch of Tunnock’s tea cakes, each in its foil wrapper with trademark red and white striped pattern.
Rest of the world: “Hooray, the astronauts splashed down safely”
Every British person ever: “TUNNOCKS TEACAKES”

Sakurajima is busy doing Sakurajima things, right now! www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeEl...
That worked without issues, hopefully I'll get to try an OS/400 install this weekend.
OK boards are here. To clarify, I've grabbed the dev-BlueSCSI_2026-04-04_3151fbd.zip, extracted it, now I just need to do the FW update via USB thing using the BlueSCSI_Ultra_Wide_2026-04-04_3151fbd.uf2 file, and it should Just Work? I don't need to build from source or anything?
As I understand it, today we're referring to him as Alfred 'Whirling' Mahan...
I hear they're calling him Alfred 'Whirling' Mahan these days...
Ugh sorry, that sucks.
A few years ago I was staying at the motel in Cajon Pass - also a photography trip. Woken at an ungodly hour by the cops. Every car in the car park had been systematically broken into - except my rental.
Why? I'd left mine unlocked, and entirely bare of any possessions.
That cover art is extremely reminiscent of the covers of recent prints of Iain M Banks.
(And that was a compliment!)
I recall a recent exchange here where I called out as suspect the inappropriate use of 'dear' in a reply - and was told that's a *strong* indication of a native Arabic speaker using machine translation.
That's true but NOT the whole story. All those countries are relatively close to the Gulf, and their tanker 'pipelines' have already partially dried up.
US and other more distal countries still have tankers en route that left before the war started. They have yet to feel full impact. But they will.
Oh it's totally a thing at Where I Work. Apart from the casual night shift movies, we have a more formal 'Love Disaster' series of screenings - putting on earthquake/volcano/disaster movies and having a giggle - with the movie generally introduced by a scientist specialising in that field!
Be advised that @cryptess.bsky.social is also here, although she hasn't done much IIRC 😀
