Thank you, Christopher for bringing attention to this story! The Mo bill, as worded, requires entities to take "reasonable steps" to enforce this but is silent on what that means. This will create dangerous situations where people confront others about restroom use or call the police.

Completely absent from the bill is an explanation of "reasonable steps" entities have to take to keep sex segregation. Bathroom monitors? Members of the public challenging other's right to use a given bathroom? Calling the police? All the likely, and bad, outcomes denied by the bill's author.

Today, #moleg Missouri House third read and passed HB 2536 a sex designation and bathroom ban against transgender people. There are several anti-LGBT bills now moving to or in the #mosen Senate with 4 weeks left in this session.

Pretty harsh on Beck, I've seen him go to the mat to stop Republican nonsense quite a bit. Dems counted votes and lacked # to stop a PQ, so negotiated terms. What else should have happened, filibuster and get PQ'd with no concessions? I don't see Beck as the problem in Jeff City, not by a mile.
10 Senate Democrats, 6 of whom are term limited, 1 actively deployed are all that stands in the way of the Republicans turning Missouri into a complete dumpster fire. Aune's criticism is aimed in the wrong direction.
The dissenting judge really wants us to believe that rights need to also be popular. As if popular speech needs protection. Somehow I doubt the judge would let "unpopular" gun rights be abridged if he was living in California. Clownery.

It is a straight up food fight on the #moleg floor! Points of order are flying, accusations against the President. The bill's title is the protection of women and Democrats are talking about the perpetrators of crimes.
Bill handler admits a father could change his infant daughter's diaper in the men OR women's room, the bill sponsor slips up and says, "do you want to get caught up in a cause of action". Freudian slip, Laubinger knows that people individually will be punished themselves, not the covered entities.
Democratic Rep points out the letter of the bill prohibits fathers from helping daughters into dormitories at college, or mothers helping sons.
Rep Thomas points out the enforcement mechanism for the bathroom ban is unclear. What "reasonable steps" means that entities take to sex segregate.
Democratic Rep questions whether male presenting transgender men, with beards, will have to use the women's restroom by law. Laubinger claims that everywhere has single occupancy restrooms to facilitate, or "most" , or retrofits with locks may be made.

This suggests that because of such hesitancy from lawmakers to keep bills to original titles and subjects, this bill may not become a much broader anti-LGBT omnibus, but that remains to be seen if this bill comes to the floor again, and what amendments are offered.

The Bill sponsor, Sen Nicola (R) has asked for it to be laid over on the informal calendar, avoiding a possibly much longer filibuster. The bill can return on any future date, however.
Sen Williams motion would broaden the title to not just deal with student transitions, drawing a point of order objection from Sen. Moon (R). The #mosen senate Pro Tem O'Laughlin (R) ruled the amendment to SB 1085 is out of order and it is stricken.
