I suspect the Pope sounds "woke" to many Christian conservatives because the US is steeped in prosperity theology, where the point of worship is to deliver health and wealth to believers. Thus, "feed the hungry" and "show mercy for the poor" sounds needlessly political and "woke."

When your whole politics is just deciding which new group to exclude and screw over, you're eventually gonna get excluded and screwed over.

The First and Second Barbary Wars were fought against Tripoli and Algiers, respectively, because Thomas Jefferson refused to pay tribute to stop the Barbary states from raiding American commerce.

~220 years later, Trump starts a war that results in Americans effectively paying tribute to Iran.

If the media were even remotely liberal every story would mention that the nuclear deal Obama cut was working extremely well before Trump withdrew from it out of spite.

An American President threatening to end a civilization is not just anti-American, it’s flat out crazy.

Counterpoint: America would be better off if "people who think women shouldn't have the right to vote" didn't vote.

These people should live their values, abstain from voting, and not make their right-wing political beliefs disguised as religion a problem for the rest of us.

Olive's Neighborhood Garden does wonderful work helping feed the hungry in our community. We had a fun time at their annual fundraiser, held at a great neighborhood establishment, Rabbits Bar.

We joined our neighbors this afternoon in standing up for democracy, letting people know that our Northwest Side community says #NoKings. The outpouring of support from those passing on the Kennedy below - honks, waves, and cheers - was a great reminder that no one is alone in this fight.

We're at the All-State Arena tonight for the PWHL Takeover Tour game between the Seattle Torrent and the New York Sirens! I hope that the turnout makes a good case for Chicago getting its own franchise soon!

After a long week, I enjoyed the beautiful weekend weather by hiking at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.

Not only was it a much-needed day on the trails, I also took a ridiculous number of good bison photos. It was special to capture such detailed portraits of animals I love so much.

Ballot cast! I voted early in-person at the Kolping Society today. It was quick and easy - I was in and out in 10 minutes.

Election Day is only 1 week away. Make sure your voice is heard in the primaries! With so many important races on your ballot, there is no excuse not to vote.

Democracy itself has become a partisan issue. As of right now, the Democratic Party is the country’s sole (small-d) democratic party – while the GOP is firmly in the hands of an ethno-nationalist movement and oligarchic interests determined to impose their reactionary vision.

One thing I feel ought to be discussed more is the fact that basically all rural and suburban places in the US are subsidized by cities. They resent cities. They insult cities. They elect politicians who abuse cities. But none of them could survive without cities.

Americans are dying in the war Donald Trump started to distract from the fact that he is a fucking pedophile.

I never want to hear from the fucking Republican Party again about "supporting the troops" while Republicans throw away the lives of our servicemembers in yet another war in the Middle East

Conservatives whine that liberals make everything political, and yet it is ALWAYS the conservatives that force their politics onto other people and into nonpartisan spaces.

At that rate, you could take a nap and do it again the next day for another $50 million.

I suppose there is no fine print saying you can't walk the 10 miles in the first 4-5 hours with a casual beer and/or taco per mile, and then down the rest at a reasonable pace the rest of the day at the finish line...

A Chicago city block is 1/8 of a mile long, so to do this someone would only have to "run" less than four blocks per hour (if they utilized the full 24 hours).

(I suppose the rest depends on the ABV of the beer and the size of the tacos...)

I hope someday, when we've rooted out all the bullshit of this era, the men's lockerroom antics will be just an unfortunate footnote on a gold medal moment. But that day may never come for some of us whom they let down

As far as American heroes go, I'll take Hilary Knight over a Tkachuk any day 8/🧵

Considering this all just happened, I imagine we'll learn more as time goes on. Will any players show remorse? Will reporters ask them why they laughed at the idea of celebrating the women's team?

If any player felt it was wrong to denigrate fellow gold medal-winning Americans, he should say so. 7/

I watch a lot of women's sports, especially hockey. I don't do it to "look progressive" or virtue signal or anything like that.

I watch women's sports because I am a rabid sports fan, and *real sports fans watch women's sports*.

And real men celebrate their female teammates' accomplishments. 6/

I guess that's the tough part about being an American sports fan (especially, an American hockey fan). Team USA can represent the best in us, but also the worst in us

Unlike Trump, I don't pick and choose which of my fellow Americans I support. I just ask that they act how real Americans should. 5/

I figured that Trump and his MAGA monsters would try to latch onto American [male] successes. They're obsessed with covering anything American with their slime.

Although I won't let what happened after erase the joy I felt when Hughes scored, the insulting aftermath tarnishes the team's legacy. 4/
