Our dean at the Faculty of Agriculture Food & Engineering is the only dean @unibonn.bsky.social who wears a chain of office. This is a relict of the time before our faculty joined the University of Bonn in 1934 and was an independent Agricultural University. During that era it was the rector’s chain
calender sheet on the sequencing of chr 22 in 1999.
Yesterday 25 years ago, the first human chromosome (chr. 22) was sequenced. Back then, sequencing of the second smallest chromosome took them almost 10 years!
Sequencing of the whole human genome was completed in 2003 at estimated costs of $ 2.7 billion. Nowadays you can sequence a whole human genome for less than $ 1000. To achieve an accuracy compareable to the 2003 genome sequence costs would be today around $ 10 - 20 million.
