Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science
If you get a moment, please check out this message for Dr Aster Gebrekirstos and Ethiopian agroforestry researcher
💧Wetlands are more than just water and reeds; they’re where culture and environment intertwine.
On #WorldWetlandsDay, we spotlight funded project ILWGAWS, working to protect one of Ghana’s most ecologically significant wetlands: the Greater Amanzule🌿

If your #biodiversity related research requires interaction with Indigenous People and Local Communities, you will be interested in these insights. They are lessons from the #GCBC research programme from across Africa, Asia and Latin America

🌎 Seaweeds- ecologically & economically important but not integrated into conservation planning. Want to know why? Want to know more? This paper is an excellent place to start

...and am I right that moss (and lichens) on your roof means your air and rainwater are reasonably pollution free?
Random thing, but I did not know that we owe 'jaywalking' to the wonderful auto-industry.
Apparently it's from early 20th century US. The car industry used it to blame pedestrians for accidents (a jay was a cluelessly bumkin, so the accident is their fault, not the car/driver's...)
True???
In the highlands of Ecuador, climate change isn’t abstract - it’s visible in wilting crops, shifting rains, and lost knowledge.
In response, an interdisciplinary initiative led by the International Potato Center bridges science, tradition, and youth engagement.
You are not alone. I can't use them.

UK Minister Mary Creagh on the Principles for Inclusive Nature Action
“They challenge us to rethink how we fund, design, and deliver climate and biodiversity solutions. They call for structural change - like securing land rights, strengthening local leadership...",
And sheep and goats did/still do terrible ecological damage in post-Colonia Mexico -not withstanding their economic importance to poor farmers.
Some good news- "On Guadalupe Island, after the eradication of goats recruitment of three endemic trees increased from zero to 150,000 individuals".

Maybe I'm a pedant but so pleased to hear someone revive the original linguistic meaning of performative. The way it's used now is almost the opposite- something done without intention to achieve anything.
And don’t get me started on ‘iconic’.
(OK- I am a pedant 🙁)
It's #WorldLakeDay!
🌐 A year ago, Lake Sofia, Madagascar lost 90% of its water and was on the brink of collapse threatening livelihoods & world’s rarest duck. Thanks to research and community action the lake is full again.

Suddenly I'm seeing Jersey Tigers for the first time in my small Surrey back garden. Are they on the march north?
It's that time of year when I have to remind myself that this lovely thing is also cuckoo flower...and something else too.
I think.

This is a topic I am interested in. Do you have references for the expansion of farmland into wilderness due to agroecological farming?
