On the newsletter this week: Mr Fingers’ Leev Ur Mynd - or genius at rest and play. “Larry Heard’s genius lies in making it all sound so easy. Listen to those first, classic Mr. Fingers records and the music sounds absolutely inevitable.” linenoise.substack.com/p/mr-fingers...

I am a fresh convert, after being totally bewitched by My Phantoms! WHAT a writer.
On Line Noise podcast this week, an interview with System 7, AKA Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy. Has anyone had a more interesting life in music? In Gong in the70s, recorded Rainbow Dome Musick in 1979, gravitated to acid house in the 80s + formed System 7 in 1989. soundcloud.com/line-noise-p...
who does Primal Scream's press in the UK? (Sorry to be so boring...)
On the Line Noise podcast today, a special interview with Matt Black of Coldcut! We talked about Sound Mirrors, ahead of its 20th anniversary re-release; but we also went gloriously all over the shop, from Top of the Pops to AI. soundcloud.com/line-noise-p...
On the Substack: “A really good musician cannot do techno” - a rare interview with Terrence Dixon, in which the enigmatic Detroit producer talks extreme repetition, Tresor, Juan Atkins, Mike Banks + his Kraftwerk-loving grandmother. Now in written form. linenoise.substack.com/p/a-really-g...
V. excited that my guest on the Line Noise podcast @radioprimavera.bsky.social this week is the rarely interviewed Detroit techno legend Terrence Dixon! We talked about his history with Tresor, extreme repetition, Juan Atkins, Mike Banks, not reading manuals + more. soundcloud.com/line-noise-p...
i hope the white house sends vance to campaign for Reform in britain
I mean I do like cats but they don't give the kind of unquestioning affection I look for in a pet.
I Want a Dog is probably the PSB song that occupies the greatest amount of my headspace. Largely because A) it is a great song an B) I do, actually, want a dog. "You can get lonely / and a cat's no help with that." Amen.
Perfect Croydon cosmic disco
This incredible record sat in relative obscurity for 44 years, I tracked down the original artists and master tapes and today my label Phantasy reissues it. Give it a spin.

In our latest Tier List for @radioprimavera.bsky.social Johann and I get deep into David Bowie’s post-Tin Machine catalogue, a surprisingly fertile field for discussion. What’s the best? What’s the worst? And what's underrated? Discover here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ly6...
it really is! Absolutely 100% NOT what I was expecting.
I love it when people really get INTO IT in an interview. That was the case on Line Noise podcast @radioprimavera.bsky.social, where I spoke to Calibre about everything from his lack of confidence in his voice to 80s Belfast, passing by Lankum, perfect pitch + more. soundcloud.com/line-noise-p...
lots of love to @abibliss.bsky.social and @thewiremagazine.bsky.social for the Stereolab book review. I particularly love the fact that @abibliss.bsky.social wants more Ligeti! Now that's a review.
On the newsletter : How do you remix Sun Ra? And what’s the point? These are the questions asked by When There Is No Sun, a new compilation in which a handful of artists get to grips with the extravagantly cosmic work of one of jazz’s most singular artists. linenoise.substack.com/p/when-there...
Both a Flying Saucer Attack reference and a Beak> joke in the latest @theguardian.com football David Squires cartoon and, really, we are not worthy. www.theguardian.com/football/pic...
I am always in favour of a xylophone. And - yes - a great song I don't think I even mentioned! The Stereolab catalogue is ridiculously deep.
On this week’s Line Noise podcast @radioprimavera.bsky.social, I spoke to French producer Malibu ahead of her @primaverasounds.bsky.social gigs in Barcelona and Madrid about the profound impact of ive shows, music as a diary, growing up in a small town + LA loneliness. soundcloud.com/line-noise-p...
absolutely!
and a question. What song would have been in your 20 Stereolab songs that I didn't include?
thank you so much Mark! WHAT an album MAQ is.
thank you so much!!!!!! That means a lot!! (And should you fancy posting a review on Goodreads, that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.) (I know... I know...)
Yr book is absolutely brilliant; I’ve learnt loads of things I didn’t know. You’ve practically written a chronological biography focusing on the band’s exceptional body of work.
Will the next book be a track/track analysis of every album,
Really! Thank you for your passionate and fascinating work!
with friends like these, especially, is an amazing tune and, yes, would have made the album better. I sometimes make my own versions of albums on Apple Music because, yes, I am that boring
I had an editor once who also insisted on "boxed set". Honestly, it used to kind of annoy me. We were also strictly banned from saying that bands released albums because labels released albums, not bands. And we couldn't say "sophomore albums".
