SNAP benefits feed essential needs while still leaving many hungry for more Journalist and author Adam Chandler explains what so much of the conversation about them gets wrong.

As SNAP hangs in the balance for nearly 42 million people, misinformation is rampant. Myths of laziness and fraud persist when we should be talking about too low wages for workers, income inequality, and our threadbare social safety net.

In this guest post, Adam Chandler sorts fact from fiction:

That doesn't to apply to motorcycles, though, right?😜
Right?😰

😂Most riding I do on my three motorcycles is done purely for fun, and not as a means to get to and from work (although I use them for that too), so it only brings me joy. Yes, it's a cost, but it's a cost I pay with joy. 😎

Car Harms Monday: Why Driving is Bad for Business, Household Wealth and Community Prosperity in 8 Images - Streetsblog New York City In the latest entry in our car harms series, an economist shows why car dependency is actually bad for business.

Study finds that most US driving imposes more costs than it produces benefits -- in other words, it is *subtracting prosperity*.

Wow, the probability was much higher than I would have guessed! Also, no, I would not have been able to put that maths together. :-)

Today, Trump’s fascist regime:
1. Passed a bill that steals our money to enrich billionaires, strips people of food and healthcare, and provides billions of dollars to ICE.
2. Opened a concentration camp in Florida named “Alligator Alcatraz”.
3. Shared intentions to denaturalize and deport citizens.

"Alligator Alcatraz" is wrong and media should not use it. It's propaganda. Alcatraz held people convicted of crimes, particularly violent crimes.

The Florida camp holds people *not* convicted of any crime. If they had been, they'd be in prison elsewhere.

The site is a textbook concentration camp.

Senate Republicans have betrayed the American people.

When people start losing their Medicaid
When people start losing their jobs
When electric bills go up
When health care premiums go up
When kids and parents lose SNAP funding

The American people will remember this vote.

This fight isn't over.

Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” is headed to the House, and we have the power to stop it.

9 months ago 1707 631 111 65

Republicans have jammed through a cruel and callous bill that will rip health care and food assistance away from millions of Americans. All so Donald Trump can give massive tax breaks to his billionaire donors. It’s a gutting betrayal of working class Americans.

17 million Americans will lose their health care coverage if the GOP’s tax scheme is signed into law. Why would anyone vote for this poison?

9 months ago 618 175 67 9

really does feel like if we can cyberbully the House into passing changes on the shit they openly hate and get it kicked back upstairs again there’s a chance it might not survive the Senate a second time

if you live in a GOP state it’s time to ruin a House rep’s life

Josh Hawley acted like he was going to fight the Medicaid cuts that will hurt many thousands in his state - most his voters in rural areas.

Then he ran away.

It is obscene to give tax breaks to the top 1% by throwing more than 16 million people off health care, cutting nutrition for hungry kids and making it harder for working class young people to go to college.

That is exactly what Trump's budget reconciliation bill does.

My statement on Donald Trump's threat to deport me and his praise for Eric Adams, who the President "helped out" of legal accountability.

9 months ago 31613 9254 820 478

I continue to be struck by this language of “in accordance with the president’s priorities,” which treats the executive branch as an extension of the person of the president, and not a mechanism for instituting the will of Congress

This is a betrayal of everything I have spent my life working on. AI *can* make a meaningful difference in drug discovery, but the idea that we can outsource regulatory approval of medicine to AI - without data from animal models - is going to do tremendous damage, to both AI and medicine.

We watched The Old Guard again yesterday in preparation for the new one and what a GREAT film that is, so looking forward to more. Just great.

Turn it off. Stop using it. Turn it off. Stop. Stop. Stop.

If every time I was wrong about something, a gallon of precious water was boiled into the sky, my neighbourhood got polluted and someone lost their job, people would stop asking me things.

because right-wing shitheads take it as an article of faith that government expenditures cannot possibly have a ROI better than dollar for dollar, let alone this kind of massive return

meanwhile, I burned out on public policy work because I know how wasteful austerity really is
