At this point, if someone told them asylum seekers "are eating the dogs, the cats" they'd go "this is a grave problem, we are appalled, we already have all these new measures in place against asylum seekers, and this is actually the Tories' fault"
Labour is so scared of the immigration issue and so driven by the narrative that they have lost their voters to Reform that no matter how ridiculous the news story (Telegraph on prisons, BBC on asylum seekers claiming to be gay) they give in to rightwing talking points too afraid to set things right

Sure. He deserves a lot of criticism. So do all the other people who have contributed to and made a career out of this narrative and strategy. By labeling it the "McSweeney" strategy we move the focus away from the political and media landscape that has led to this.
Labour's move to the right on immigration to win back voters esp. from Reform wasn't the "McSweeney strategy." This strategy was - against all evidence - promoted by tons of journalists, think tankers and academics. Embraced by large shares of Labour politicians. Too easy to just blame it on one guy
This is really important in the context of the Worcester LGBT story. What the BBC is calling an 'investigation' is basically an anecdote with a single verified example. From a standpoint of journalistic integrity, the piece is pathetic. But it is profoundly dangerous in promoting a hateful narrative

Especially a day after so many LGBTQ+ activists helped to defeat Viktor Orban who used this rhetoric and ideology as an essential part of his illiberal regime, it is incredibly ignorant.
Just because the pope is Trump's newest enemy does not mean we need to idealize the Catholic Church and it's role for liberal democracy. It is a central organisation in the global diffusion of anti-LGBT rhetoric and ideology. It thereby provides a key building block for far-right authoritarianism.
