The fact is, the consequences of our actions are not limited by our intentions. When we kill someone we believe might one day harm us, we do not erase evil from the world. We multiply it. We embody it. We perpetuate the cycle, and make the existence we aimed to protect far less worthy of protection.

The question of "would you go back in time and kill baby Hitler" has never been about time travel. It's about moral certitude as an offshoot of pain and existential fear, and whether that certitude is worth anything if the ultimate expression of our morality is preventative murder of the innocent.
