hi austin friends! it's self promo time, but if you'd like to nominate yours truly for best film critic in austin, today's the last day to write my name in 💜 vote.austinchronicle.com/politics-and...

big year at the movies for power hungry grubs named titus
COOKIE QUEENS: truly effervescent! a beautiful examination of girlhood through a specific lens. watching the girls go on their journeys of self-resilience and determination was amazing. the kids are alright :'-) #SXSW26
SENDER is a compelling, tender thriller about mystery packages, addiction, and recovery. lower & dastmalchian are the MVPs of this one for me!

MY BROTHER'S KILLER is an engaging doc that gets thorny when it doesn't grapple with the tension between inherently unjust systems and the desire for progress in law enforcement.
i wrote about it for @austinchronicle.bsky.social #SXSW26 www.austinchronicle.com/screens/sxsw...
i mostly liked the slight, chaotic ERUPCJA. it's a movie about coincidences, friendship, and fate that is at its best when it uses colors and aesthetics to cement its mood.

more writing will be coming later today, but here's a repost for the sunday morning crowd:
good morning from my cinephile breakfast of champs on day 4 of #SXSW! 🍿🎬
greetings from #SXSW day 3 🎬🤠
my first dispatch out of #SXSW is all about BABY/GIRLS, a doc about teen pregnancy in a post-Dobbs world that can be empathetic, but opaque.

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!
Happy IWD.

in my latest sundance dispatch, i wrote about the mixed media doc, THEYDREAM. it's a compelling look at how one artist memorializes their loved ones through art. emotionally, though, it is almost too much to bear. latinamedia.co/theydream/
