Upon learning that they'd won the prize, Qing expressed that it 'is a tremendous honour' and 'it is incredibly encouraging to see this work recognized... especially as it reflects many years of collaboration, fieldwork, and mentorship' 📚
Senior Editor @josbarlow.bsky.social commended the study as 'it is an elegant example of how species’ biology and behaviours interact with humans' 💬
Importantly, it contributes to 'meaningful outcomes for conservation' 🤝
The study shows how the coexistence of Przewalski’s horses and Asiatic wild asses is enabled by the latter avoiding water points near human infrastructures. The avoidance of these sites by the Ass herds prevents their depletion, providing reliable drinking spots for the horses 🌊
This year’s Southwood Prize for the best article by an early career researcher goes to Qing Cao! 🏅
We'll be discussing the winning research article 'Coexistence between Przewalski's horse and Asiatic wild ass in the desert: The importance of people' in more detail below! 🫏
