BtB Retreat 2025 | jerthorp Spend five days in the lush and bird-filled jungle of Santa Marta, Colombia with Jer Thorp and a small group of curious bird + data + art enthusiasts. We'll wander the forest with local guides, learn ...

What if we left this endless scroll behind... and walked into the forest?

In September I'm leading a five-day gathering in the Colombian rainforest centered around observation, ecology, mindful data practice, and care.

Saw my Carolina Chickadee (and not a whole lot else) for the year in Dumbarton Oaks Park this morning. Anybody else #eBirding #AGU24? Somebody has to be, there are 25k of us.

I came to #AGU24 for the remote sensing data, but am staying to talk about combining it with participatory science data on birds (eBird).

If you want to see the rest of this poster, come see me at Board 1524 in Hall B-C on Thursday from 1:40-5:30. Or just reach out if you want to chat sooner.

Two guys sitting on fake grass surrounded by a low white picket fence; one guy has two puppies in his lap and both men are looking joyfully at the little pooches.

A woman and a man sitting on fake grass surrounded by a low white picket fence with a puppy between them; they look happy petting the dog; another woman sit with another puppy and appears to be taking a selfie with the pooch. And who could blame her? It's not every day that one has a puppy in one's lap while at a meeting!

... puppies (PUPPIES!!!) at #AGU24!

Puppies!!!

As an exhibitor in another part of the hall put it: "How are we supposed to compete with puppies?!" And two minutes later from the same exhibitor, "Where are they again?" before heading over to see them.

Birders who are obsessed with listing used to be called "dickeybirders" and I think we should bring this back.

Enjoyed a session on Landsat applications at #AGU24. Excited for #LandsatNext with higher spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution in 2031. Lots of great applications underway, including near real-time water quality, land conversion detection, and water cover products.

Heading to #AGU24 in DC tomorrow. Giving a poster in "Advances in Remote Sensing for Monitoring Biodiversity Change: Integrating Data and Models Across Scales and Technologies" session on Thursday aft. Excited to see where others are at on this topic and catch up on new remote sensing products.

I still don't have Wild (or Ocellated for that matter) Turkey on my World Thanksgiving Day list.

Nice thrush descent outside of Ithaca this morning. With call rates around 60 per minute, it was a little tough to estimate, but got close. Surprised at how few warblers there were at any point in the looking. ebird.org/checklist/S1... #ebird #birding #nfc

Lifers in the U.S. are pretty rare for me these days, so feeling particularly celebratory about this Bendire's Thrasher.
