I did my masters on a related topic, and having read through the literature it is really remarkable how much additional cost means testing adds, arguably/usually more than it “saves” by restricting access. It can also lead to higher rates of tax fraud by people on the margin of losing access

It is always much simpler to create a universal public service. Means testing just adds complexity and generates resentment. The @nytimes.com is just making some noise on behalf of its billionaire friends to make life difficult for Mamdani.

I adore Weil’s work, but I do not pretend to understand her theology. Trying to make anything she says in Gravity and Grace make sense except in relation to itself is rarely productive

The reason i’m thinking about this is because the mass exodus of nuns following vatican two’s failure to deliver on women’s issues and how the entrance of these ex nuns influenced radical feminism towards more ontological essentialism (especially around trans issues) than we could have foreseen

I am curious about where these women go once they leave right wing movements. My suspicion is that a significant percentage of them enter the left. While I don’t think we should turn anyone away, I do worry about what ideas these women accidentally import into our communities
