Solidarity with my Jewish friends. Have watched some people on the left over the last few years weaponise a horrific genocide to normalise antisemitism. Of course, Israel and its supporters have deliberately sought to conflate Judaism and Israel - but that cannot justify the left doing the same.

to be clear i’m not concerned about tax fraud (except among the wealthy), my concern with it here is primarily that unlike the wealthy these people often end up getting caught and punished when they were only trying to preserve access to much needed services

lowkey I would love that please!

I did my masters on a related topic, and having read through the literature it is really remarkable how much additional cost means testing adds, arguably/usually more than it “saves” by restricting access. It can also lead to higher rates of tax fraud by people on the margin of losing access

It is always much simpler to create a universal public service. Means testing just adds complexity and generates resentment. The @nytimes.com is just making some noise on behalf of its billionaire friends to make life difficult for Mamdani.

"oho, and what happens when people you don't like get access to the system" being something they think of as a dealbreaker really underscores what their actual objection is

Redefining Sisterhood: The New Nuns, Laywomen and Catholic Feminist Activism, 1953-1992 The involvement of American Catholic women in the feminist movement after 1960 is considered an anomaly. Yet, Catholic feminist activism thrived in large American cities like Chicago. This dissertatio...

There’s not much written on it, and a lot of what does exist is about the nuns who stayed behind. I know about it primarily because a friend of mine has extensively researched it in the quebec context, but here’s something kinda about it

I adore Weil’s work, but I do not pretend to understand her theology. Trying to make anything she says in Gravity and Grace make sense except in relation to itself is rarely productive

Not to mention of course the white supremacy that is so often hidden in the desire of trad women to live “when things were better” which is pretty much exclusively also “when things were segregated” or “when slavery existed”

Probably some very essentialist views about “the difference between men and women” and potentially some very intense ideas about nature and a desired return to an idealized past.

The reason i’m thinking about this is because the mass exodus of nuns following vatican two’s failure to deliver on women’s issues and how the entrance of these ex nuns influenced radical feminism towards more ontological essentialism (especially around trans issues) than we could have foreseen

I am curious about where these women go once they leave right wing movements. My suspicion is that a significant percentage of them enter the left. While I don’t think we should turn anyone away, I do worry about what ideas these women accidentally import into our communities

This is honestly the most depressing part of potentially exiting academia, the choking cost of paywalled texts

a thought on something I see mentioned sometimes, for many years: I don't really see a "backlog" as some shameful or stressful thing. I kind of love having an entire library of games and movies and books to engage with at my leisure!! it's cool!!

It's so punishingly obvious that many left-liberal types feel completely unrestrained in petty displays of sadism and hierarchal reaffirmation against trans people at this point. Grueling to watch your nominal allies hold their fingers to the wind and decide they can hurt you.

All but three (!) of the 1,651 refugees admitted into the United States in the three most recent months we have data are white South Africans.

For comparison, in 2024, the U.S. admitted 100,060 refugees. It's an explicit white supremacist project.

The time has come for us, as an organisation, to boycott @pinknews.bsky.social.

Despite reservations about the company, we have sometimes worked with queer and trans reporters there to tell stories we thought were important for our community - the same as other outlets.

That ends today. Why?

I am positive she lied to my face about something, I am unclear on if she lied about something closely related to it too, but people have told me she did. I am not trying to get embroiled in anything. I am just expressing my own dismay.
