Laughter really is the best medicine.. when you work in medicine!
Working in ICU can definitely take its toll, but the camaraderie and craic I experience in my unit is an absolute tonic.
A life-saver for the life-savers.

It's the classic Mel Gibson and Jesus meme where Mel is on set in normal clothes casually chatting to a very bloody Jesus (for those of you who don't know it).

So pro-life means jailing women who miscarry but shrugging when the deranged president says โa whole civilization will die tonight.โ Do I have that right?
Trump went from making insane genocidal threats this morning to hyping the โgolden ageโ of Iran hours later, and he received no concessions in between. Heโs an absolute basket case who needs to be removed from power before he follows through on one of his mass murder fantasies.
Add to this the *at least* 1,722 healthcare workers killed in Gaza since October 7th.
There's so much in this world we cannot stand for.
We categorically cannot stand for these repeated, heinous war crimes.
Every time I see this piece it cuts right to my core, breaks my heart and generates such profound compassion for the world that I am moved to tears.
If only I could hold such compassion for myself.
A work in progress perhaps ๐ป

As a clinical psychology service in a hospital, we see a tiny tiny fraction of patients. But ALL patients have psychological needs. Clearly not everyone needs to see a psychologist, but psychological care should just be an integral part of normal care.
An inevitable consequence of a society that fails to really get it: to break these cycles takes investment, participation, trauma-informed compassionate systems and therapeutic communities that see pain long before they reach for punishment.
Some days I just get so mad.
Frequently I feel very sad.
With every barrier to succeed in society. Coping as best as you can with the demons in your mind. Lacking the skills, the knowledge, the means to break the cycle. And so it continues.
People are hurt along the way, chances are the central figure dies young.
... distress and behaviour becomes volatile. The revolving door of incarceration begins, sometimes at a very early age. Prison becomes the new norm; can be aversive, but also provides structure, predictable meals.
Containment.
Maybe opportunities.
Then you're out. Back into chaos. No structure.
There are those, born into disadvantage, with every barrier in place to succeed in society. Those living in poverty are steeped in adverse childhood experiences, whether it be personally or in their community. Without ready access to opportunity and supports, drugs and criminality interact with...
In the absence of meaningful therapy & support options, you can't judge people for finding their own ways to get by.
Pretty daunting hearing the news, the feeling of inevitability of further extensive damage to people & planet... Feels like the best any of us can do is to love the kids, be a decent friend & colleague. Care about one another in little ways. Appreciate the new day.
Thinking about space to reflect in hospital settings amid these crazy, unsettling times, so much going on. You can feel the vibe of โthereโs just no time for that", or โwe just need to get our heads down & crack onโ. Surely now is when we need to commit *even more* to slowing down & taking a breath.
God love the poor women in the dรณchas, surely being in prison is punishment enough.

Dedicated to the memory of ICU nurse Alex Pretti. A nurse's pledge: โI am a nurse. I will not permit consideration of religion, nationality, race, or social standing to intervene between my duty and my patient. I am a nurse. I will maintain the utmost respect for human life. I am a nurse. I make these promises solemnly, freely, and upon my honor. And I will do it again, every day. Every day. Every day. Amen.โ

My heart breaks for the young people, and their families, who were killed and injured in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
The footage online is chilling, to say the least.
It says something that so many chose to video than to flee, as the fire took hold. Adds dimensions to the devastation.
