Another solar generation record set today in Britain.
14,426 megawatts were being generated at 11.30 today, delivering 37% of GB’s electricity and contributing to a record low reliance on fossil fuels. Gas accounted for just 2% of electricity generation at that time.

🔴 Britain’s Solar Revolution Is Here and We Should Be Shouting It From the Rooftops
Ed Miliband is helping to turn the country into a nation of ‘solar zealots’ and I'm enthusiastically along for the ride. Thankfully I'm not alone.
bylinetimes.com/2026/04/22/b...
Govt makes major announcement on clean power and #Today prog pivots the debate onto oil & gas over two sections. Miliband was barely asked Q about clean power. That was not media scrutiny it was news distortion.
Got our solar panels installed this AM. They came at 8:30am and we're gone by 1:30pm. 13 panels and 10kwh battery.
We can't export to the grid yet (the network operator has been flooded with new requests) but we charged our car with the sun this afternoon. Great feeling, strongly recommend.
An extract from IF WE TOLERATE THIS is today's Guardian Long Read.

Good news. Booming solar and wind energy will enable Britain to escape gas shortages caused by the Iran War this summer, reports the authoritative Jillian Ambrose. So much is being produced that people are being urged to up consumption so as to use it

A nice reminder from Ember, using British data. Wind and solar are complementary. Our system works best when you have both, each calling on their own strengths in terms of generation patterns.
If either struggles to grow like it should, we end up with a more expensive, slower fossil phase-out
Heat pump orders up 2x in a month. Solar panel inquiries up 250%. EV leases up 85%.
The Iran crisis has made energy security feel personal.
I understand why: I have solar panels, a heat pump & EV on a flexible tariff. When gas prices spike, my bills barely move.

UK businesses could get free electricity if appliances are used when there's a surplus supply of energy in the system 💡
Featured on Radio 4, Chris Hewett (Chief Executive of SEUK) talks about how shifting consumption can result in cheaper power.

'Waste not, want not': homes with batteries to cash in from free power offer 💡
A plan to offer free electricity when wind and solar energy supplies are at their height will allow consumers with battery energy storage systems to benefit the most.

I have literally seen a flock of starlings swooping and ‘playing’ around running wind turbines and they were clearly at no risk whatsoever of hitting them so this tracks.
As a fellow glass half full person I agree with every word here. Clean energy is moving faster than most mainstream media and politicians understand. We have to keep telling this story better and better.
Every sensible government will spend the coming months accelerating the deployment of solar, batteries, heat pumps, and EVs, especially for lower income households. It’ll be a hell of a lot cheaper in the long run than subsidising fossil fuels the next time prices spike, which they will.

Record wind and solar saved UK from gas imports worth £1bn in March 2026.
@carbonbrief.org's analysis revealed the UK avoided the need for gas imports due to record electricity generation from wind and solar.

20% of British electricity coming from solar power at six in the evening in early April is absolutely remarkable.
And we’re just getting started…🇬🇧♻️⚡️💡🔋😎
On a lovely sunny Easter Monday solar is generating ~40% of UK electricity.
2026 is predicted to see an extra 5-5.5 gigawatts of new capacity installed.
This is a 50% increase on the capacity installed in 2025, which was a 50% increase on the capacity installed in 2024
The price of lithium-ion batteries has fallen by 99% since 1991 Representative estimate of the price of battery cells for lithium-ion batteries, across all major cell chemistries. Prices are in US dollars per kilowatt-hour, adjusted for inflation.
At a time when everything seems bad, here’s a bit of good news. In 1991, lithium-ion batteries cost around $9,200 per kilowatt-hour — 33 years later, they cost just $78. This helps us move towards electrification of transport and energy storage in homes

NEW ANALYSIS: Record wind and solar generation saved UK from gas imports worth £1bn in March 2026
📈Wind+solar were up 22% year-on-year in March to a record high for the month

Britain smashed more renewable energy records last year.
Wind delivered 30% of electricity, solar generation grew by 37% & UK emissions fell to 54% of 1990 levels.
More clean power means more control over our energy security, bills and our future.

Lots of positive stories here of people saving a fortune on energy bills
Also lots of Qs from people who understandably can't afford upfront costs
There are 7 options I can find to get around this. 5 are available now, 2 are on their way
Since I'm becoming a bit of a solar evangelist, here you go
This is how you "break link between the price of gas and the price of electricity": building more wind power, solar, grid upgrades and grid batteries.
In March gas set the price of electricity some 65% of the time – it used to be 98% across a year
Another massive battery storage record in California (CAISO) yesterday, March 29 🔋
At 7pm, batteries reached 12.3 GW of output, meeting 42.8% of demand!
And it's not just a short peak anymore. Batteries stayed above 20% of grid supply from 5.50pm to 9.35pm, almost four hours.
Report for Cornwall Council vindicates solar farm expansion 📈
An independent report on solar farms in Cornwall has backed the industry’s assertions that the sector can grow markedly without significant impacts on food production.

Kemi Badenoch was forced this morning to reveal the truth - she knows more North Sea licenses won't take a penny off bills.
A pragmatic energy policy continues to use the North Sea while going faster on the clean energy transition.
That's what this government is doing.
"Government data reveals 2.5 GW of new solar added in 12-months period, the fastest pace for a decade."
This is huge. And it's only going to grow. www.pv-magazine.com/2026/03/26/u....
