Journalists in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and Mexico faced extreme risks from armed groups, criminal networks, and conflicts. These deaths are not accidents. Attacks often go unpunished, threatening the public’s right to information.
2025 has been one of the deadliest years on record for journalists. RSF reports 67 killed, 503 detained, 135 missing, and 20 held hostage worldwide. Most were reporting in their own countries and targeted for their work.
At 78 years old and in fragile health after years in detention, Jimmy Lai now awaits sentencing and could face life in prison. Critics warn the verdict sends a stark message about the future of press freedom in Hong Kong and around the world.
