It depends on the strength of the target. In this case, unlike the actual galaxy the clouds are very faint. I put in 30 hours of photography for what we see here. I think I could put another 30 to bring them out more. I put in 12 hours for the actual galaxy but really didn't need that much.

An image like this takes many hours of integration to begin with, and the faint hydrogen requires many more. They are very faint and hard to capture without enough integration time. The biggest challenge, honestly, was simply getting enough clear skies.

What we see here isn’t just a galaxy and it's bright core, but the ongoing process of stellar birth unfolding across hundreds of thousands of light-years.

This image brings out the hydrogen-alpha emission from active star-forming regions across the spiral arms, along with the vast, faint hydrogen clouds extending far beyond the visible disk.
