These rule changes don't just *feel* a bit harsh, they are life-changing. The fact that you cannot even acknowledge that makes me wonder if you have any empathy whatsoever
My wife may not be able to vote, but I can. If these proposals go through, there is no way I will ever be able to vote for Labour again.
That we now have to wait a decade (or more) hoping that nothing happens to make her ineligible to stay, or she gets kicked out and I have to chose between living in my own country and living with the person I love?
Oh, so some people โfeel that it's a bit harshโ that after spending a year living apart from my wife just so that *we* could follow the rules, the government can just change the rules on a whim to prevent her settling?
Hey academic climate folks, great new chaired position at @uniofeastanglia.bsky.social working w/ the folks at the Climatic Research Unit in Norwich UK:

My wife and I in front of Big Ben, holding a placard saying no to "earned" settlement, with the "earned" very much in scare quotes
Hoping to meet my MP (@labourlewis.bsky.social) at the mass lobby arranged by @praxisprojects.bsky.social, to ask him to reject the government's hostile changes to settlement for migrants
Blue Labour keeps using the word "fairness", yet keep pushing immigration reforms that lack any sort of fairness. Any movement that can invite my wife to the UK (as long as we spend a year apart first to follow the rules), but then decides we can't settle is not a movement I can have any part of.
And I missed "compassionate" in there. Seriously? Do you actually know what changes have been propose?
How are the migration rules fair? My wife and I had to give up a year of our life together to follow the rules when I moved back here. Now you are changing them so we cannot settle. The rich get to skip all of that, and pay far less in visa fees than the poor? Is that fair?
There is an options in settings to not let you post without alt text (I know because I would always forget if I hadn't turned that option onโฆ)

Graphic with the following text: "1. International students who do not generate provider income should be exempt - including Erasmus+ participants following the UKโs association."
"2. Students studying SHAPE subjects must be eligible for levyfunded maintenance grants. Restricting subject eligibility harms UK economic growth and signals that disadvantaged students โdeserveโ fewer choices."
"We urge the government to reconsider the levy, engage with the sector, and pursue a sustainable funding model to safeguard higher education and research."
We are continuing to call for the government to withdraw the International Student Levy. This levy will add more financial pressure to a system under strain, threatening the UKโs research excellence, global reputation, and economic competitiveness.
Thanks!
I just sent an email to meet my MP about this. My MP seems sympathetic anyway, but really hope the government does change their mind on these cruel, hostile changes.
Mt St Helens in the distance, looking obliquely into the crater caused by the lateral blast in 1980. In the foreground is the hummocky terrain of the top of the debris avalanche deposits, with a small pond near the camera sitting in a depression between hummocks. There are many small shrubs and trees, mostly about 0.5โ2 m tall, that clearly are still fairly young. Between the larger shrubs is a lot of yellow grass, as this photo was taken in the height of summer.
I have some from 2017, if that helps show the transition. I suspect lots of volcanologists have similar photos though, as this was one of the mid-conference fieldtrips for IAVCEI when it was in Portland.
I've been going down a bit of a rabbit hole regarding lead 'pigs' for a piece of work I'm doing on silver.
Some were marked 'ex arg' ('of the silver mines') which suggests there may have been some de-silvering going on in Britain.

Now I'm curious, what is chilli powder in the US if it's not powdered chillies?

A very tall lava fountain with tiny dots (people) near the base. The image is a bit forced perspective and we are not as close as it looks

When my wife moved here, we gave up a year together to meet the requirements. We also paid relocation and visa costs (10ร those in other countries). We chose to do so because she was promised settlement in 5 years. Now that we've paid those costs, is it fair for the gov to change their end?
