Midnight's initial Campaign has complete and I have... A LOT to say about it.

A glorious Naz'jira mention in the year of 2026? I'll take it 16 years later.
🐸
The only thing that'll prop it up is the gameplay. But considering how busted the game is each patch, I suspect that goodwill can only go so far. But in terms of narrative, worldbuilding, tone, pacing, dialogue, and so on, Midnight makes Cataclysm & Shadowlands look competent by comparison.
BFA felt like a disaster from the start, but I stuck with it for a while; it took time for it to become intolerable to me. Shadowlands was tragic, but funny, like a clown. DF I respected for being a good soft reboot, TWW I didn't stick with but have no hard feelings for. Midnight though... man...
Hmm. Midnight feels like the fastest I've gone from, "Oh this interests me and I'm actually mostly enjoying it despite my many criticisms" to "Oh this is complete garbage that might have ruined the setting, maybe forever" for a WoW expac.
I’ve felt this way for a while tbh. It was something of a problem in Dragonflight and it feels like it has only accelerated
Here’s a post I made on the old website almost 3 years ago:
I don't think many folks would complain if they slowed down by a week or two per patch. We've got plenty of content, let them take their time and maybe go over things one more time.
Seriously, even if the devs aren't being crunched, the game itself might need a breather.
I'm not -that- pessimistic about it... but I don't have a good feeling about it, is all I'll say.
I feel like something is fundamentally wrong in the gaming industry right now that's pushing a lotta writers into rushing the conclusions of stories that'd otherwise work with more time.
And it feels like they just want to wrap stuff up older writers teased.
Not to tell those stories but just to get them out of the way- see the entire elf bullshit in the midnight endgame story
Like good lord we will kick amanthul’s ass in a single side quest in TLT
I do think the setting is fundamentally gearing up for a reset post-TLT, just not a "WoW 2" or other bs like that
Just probably a massive status quo reset, especially since they seem to be wanting to wrap up the Titan storyline, which is one of THE biggest story threads since Vanilla (Uldaman).
It just seems the Blizz writers are fully dedicated to wrapping up the setting
since DF maybe all their plots are tying up factions and races and characters in pretty happy bows with no future plots teased.
I’m becoming a “Blizz is going to reset or reboot the setting post TLT” believer to cope
This, along with the elf unity nonsense, is made for the “I don’t like the wow factions or them not getting along” people who also love DF questing because it too was made for children
Still on my bullshit
The way it’s only Zul’jan who actively points out Eversong used to be troll land makes me raise an eyebrow because why is that line of thought being placed solely on the troll who’s antagonistic for most of the zone
So what I'm afraid is going to happen with all the criticism of the blood elves' sudden 180 on the racism is Blizz's takeaway will be "oh, so they do like racism" and bring back some of the more horrific tropes they've used in the past. My troll-loving self dreads it with every fiber of my being.
Because let's face it, Blizz has a really, really bad habit of missing the point for whatever feedback they're given.
Man it really is a kind of tragedy that WoW's story goes off a fucking cliff at the same time as its gameplay reaches possibly its highest peak ever bc my negative feelings about the story are totally killing my desire to engage with that great gameplay. I've barely played for like a week and a half
ELF LEADER: I DONT SEE COSMIC FORCES ANYMORE
EVERYONE: *APPLAUSE*
The arcantina is written for 5 year olds watching Dora the explorer and I won’t apologise for thinking that.
Everyone talks the same, and they all sound lobotomised and brain dead.
They can keep this if this is the neutral future Blizz wants for wow. This ain’t for me
Like for the life of me I don’t get how Midnight is written so much worse than TWW, which while quite scattered in direction- individual patches were strong and well done!
(Sans individual quests like red dawn or Dalaran slop)
(Also not you Zul’aman and Voidstorm, you’re great)
It’s always fun defending Zul’jan because the people who hate on him just either can’t read or have the media literacy of a rock
It’s either some fun pro colonisation shit or weird projection out of spite?
Literally just go play the game and read the quest text it’s not hard
This is who they’re writing this for btw
The cognitive dissonance is wild
(I’m aware so many of you are 24+)
Thank you for saying this, I was so upset over what people were saying, but lacked the words to put it coherently. Like sure, he aspires to take back the Amani lands, which is only wrong if you come into this story with a colonialist mindset, which I wrote on Twitter is the only sin of this story.
It's interesting that the Naga are working *against* the Void and wielding its power for themselves in the new Ritual Sites, I wonder who they're harvesting all the mana from Quel'thalas for.
Oh shit the NPCs do in fact answer it for me, it's the Naga Battlemaiden Nar'jira from Vashj'ir!
That's a crazy deep callback, I love that they're pulling on those unanswered character threads from Cata for the new Naga story.
This is INCREDIBLY frustrating. The Trolls explicitly don't see Dire Trolls as monstrous, and even if the other orcs sometimes see the Bleeding Hollow magics as spooky there were PLENTY of orc hulks in WoD hanging out with other orcs.
This is wonky writing by Blizzard. It just doesn't make sense.
Has this always been a thing? In the mythic+ dungeon teleport area, a "Future Lindormi" spawned and told a story to a bunch of bronze whelps and Chromie.
