I spent countless hours learning about phylogenetic methods and using results for multiple publications during my PhD. So thankful for the ease of exploration this platform enabled, lowering the gate for me to enter the computational biology realm. Thanks CIPRES—you will be missed!

Postdoc opportunity in plant systematics + phylogenomics 🌿 my lab at the University of Michigan is recruiting for a Research Fellow working on species delimitation in neotropical myrtles. Full details + apply here (deadline April 30) careers.umich.edu/job_detail/2...
"Ozone hole" in grant descriptions by year, with two regression lines over a scatter plot
Bergogram plot: line plot of money awarded by year by NSF. 2025 and 2026 trail other years
Table of grants by US academic semester by state. In Spring 2026, New York has received 37 grants in total, Florida only 24
Word cloud of words in "formicidae" grants at NSF. "Ants" is most promient, also "species," "specimens," "project," and "collections."
Inspired by @jeremymberg.bsky.social & grant-witness.us, I've updated my rnsf #rstats package to include:
• Cache of public data on every #NSF grant (>500K)
• Info on every #GRFP
Tools for viz, examples of use, etc.

Hi all. I am very excited that after 6 years I finally got my phylogenetic comparative methods book and online exercises online. Feel free to use and share. The book is here: nhcooper123.github.io/pcm-primer/. Note that it is not finished, we had to abandon it before the sunk costs fallacy broke us
🎉 Today is Darwin’s birthday! This is an actual wild tomato plant that he collected, over 180 years ago! 🍅
We have millions of specimens like these in our collection, but did you know you can now see them on our new Data Portal, for free!? 👇

I've slowly been reformatting notes from my population and conservation genetics course at Montana State University into a web book—a rough draft is now live here: elinck.org/popgen_conge...
Application Process Image Woman behind a podium presenting. Jessie Golding, BBCS postdoc, presenting at ICCB 2025. Apply to become a Lovejoy Fellow by submitting your resume, cover letter, and contact information for three references through the University of Arizona Talent Portal (link upcoming) by the first review date of January 30, 2026. Your cover letter should: Identify 1-2 Lovejoy BBCS faculty you would be interested in working with and explain the primary research directions you would want to pursue in collaboration with this faculty member. You are strongly encouraged to reach out to faculty before submitting your application. Describe your experience with or interest in inter- or transdisciplinary research. Explain how this experience will positively impact your career trajectory.
New postdoctoral fellowship opportunity! Please pass along. Excited to announce the launch of the Tom Lovejoy Fellowship Program at the University of Arizona for innovative research to protect species, sustain ecosystems, and promote a thriving planet lovejoycenter.arizona.edu/lovejoy-fell... 🧪🌐🌾
Excellent excellent resource!
Lunch today halfway around the world in Hangzhou and met a new asst professor who was very thankful for this resource. Please help out folks like them and other early career scientists with examples of job apps. Submit yours!

Hey Yaniv Brandvain is not on Bluesky but his most recent biostats ebook is live ybrandvain.github.io/biostats/. His stats resources have been so helpful to me as I develop my own stats course, so check it out. Github repo here: github.com/ybrandvain/b...
The 2026 Workshop on Phylogenomics will take place between the 25th of January and 7th of February, in Cesky Krumlov, Czechia. 🧬🌳 Applications are now open! Deadline: 15th of November, 2025. Do not miss the chance to attend! Spread the word among colleagues! 🤗 evomics.org/apply-worksh...
While full solicitation isn’t up, looks like we have 2025 proposal deadlines for the GRFP: www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...
Big news! We are recruiting a postdoc to work on tomatillo evolution: jobs.colorado.edu/jobs/JobDeta.... The clade containing tomatillos and its allies (ca 300 spp) has evolved lantern fruits at least 25 times - we want to know why! Join us @rociodeanna.bsky.social & @caschenck-bio.bsky.social
Unsolicited listicle: My list of the most criminally underused/underappreciated phylogenetic comparative methods. Note, I am not involved in ANY of these methods; but I see them as things people are often asking of comparative data but have been surprised at how infrequently they have been cited.
"To plan for the future, it’s sometimes necessary to look to the past." Nice highlight of our work synthesizing temporal, taxonomic, and spatial trends in botanical collections to facilitate new research avenues @emlombardi.bsky.social @softcorebotany.bsky.social
Getting quality transcriptome assemblies from Herbarium samples is possible doi.org/10.1101/2025.... Work led by @atyszka.org. Another fun collaboration with @philcarella.bsky.social and @khongsamchia.bsky.social, who functionally validated an NLR immune receptor from a sample collected in 1956.
RNA from herbarium specimens is more stable than you think. Cool new study from @atyszka.org @evojfwalker.bsky.social and team. @khongsamchia.bsky.social and I were happy to contribute by functionally validating an NLR immune receptor last expressed in 1956 : www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
LH Bailey Herbarium Undergraduate Biodiversity Collections Paid Internship. Apply by Feb. 21, 2025. See QR code to apply.
Undergrads interested in making and managing herbarium collections—apply for the Summer 2025 Atluri Biodiversity Collections Internship at the LH Bailey Herbarium! 🌻 Paid experience & includes field collecting around Ithaca 🥾
Fun times discussing ways we can continue to leverage vast and sometimes hidden biodiversity held in herbarium collections with @emlombardi.bsky.social 🌿🦠
Hey botanists — the New England Botanical Society provides small grants for grad students, early career faculty, and general botanical research. We are not federally funded and we have money to support your work. Applications due Feb 1.
Bittersweet mood driving out of New Mexico. I’m going to miss my UNM Herbarium community so much, and also very excited to build a home base in Ithaca and work with new colleagues through the Bailey Herbarium. Plus I still get to continue great collaborations with @softcorebotany.bsky.social 🌱
hey everyone! i made a list of some useful starter packs (primarily biology/earth sciences with a few bonus things thrown in) to share with friends who have joined bsky in the last week and thought it may be useful for some people here too! 🌍🧪 #SciSky #BioSky docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Here's a starter pack for early career researchers in evolutionary biology. I prioritized the most-junior folks, and this list quickly filled up with undergrads, grad students, and postdocs. Might do another list later, but I'm tired. Have fun everyone! 🐒 #evobio
