this is so cool.

yesssss i’m going to ahead and bring this up at the next PNHP board meeting.
and, K awards are still a money loser for institutions because of how much they have to kick in (money, lost clinical time, resources) to support these jr faculty. the ROI doesn’t happen til the R01… so tell me again why academic medicine has built its pipeline on such a flimsy foundation?
wow, that is an amazing piece of history.
how the heck does she keep a straight face when he says this??
the stroopwaffels.
the comments are pure gold.
SUCH short sightedness. GME is a mess.
they’re fun aren’t they???
whoa whoa whoa wait a minute he ate the bunny?????????
the bigger point is not the cost… that’s beside the point. it’s that we have chosen not to do it. every time i travel internationally i am reminded that it COULD be better in the USA but for our policy choices. le sigh
duly noted :)
…. or just another centrist twiddle with the current system that will leave the role of private insurance in place and therefore not make a real demonstrable difference… certainly won’t lead to reduction in admin complexity which drives most of the excess healthcare spending in the US
this so much. people arguing that there are “too many vaccines all at once” or just too many at all and justify this by saying the immune system or body can’t handle it lack a fundamental understanding of immunology and physiology.
genius.
oh it’s annoying for us who DID come up in the basic science tradition, too. it’s crazy. like “here’s some ground breaking shit and there is NO way we will give you enough info to replicate yourself so there”
just out here saying the quiet part out loud
“might”… of course it will! glad to see this out there.
why, seth. why did you do this
people don’t get that the point of a PhD (and hopefully any research training experience) is to teach you how to think critically. all good researchers have failed spectacularly, and learned so many lessons from those failures. AI skips that part, esp with learning to code.
i think you mean indubaitably
single payer now!
i know. but… like… you have a perspective that very few others have. and i already know you to be a person who speaks truth, with integrity. tbh, i largely gave up engaging on social media because of how exhausting it is…but if you can keep going at least know that there is value in it.
please keep sharing your perspective.
how much does this really matter? elimination status does not materially impact how a local or state health dept responds to an outbreak, and we’ve all given up on the feds regardless right?
you just need tom waits.
…. which is all the more distressing.
The @whyshoulditrustyou.bsky.social team asked some tough questions of NIH Director Bhattacharya. It's worth a listen: substack.com/home/post/p-...
I wanted to add some additional context on Bhattacharya's responses. Sorry, long thread.

i think this is the product of basing our development so squarely on a belief in capitalism. with capitalism, there MUST be winners and losers, hence his zero sum framing, and people buy in to this framing. i don’t think there should be any losers. his worldview depends on there being losers.
