Thanks! And you’re right, the “what ifs” in this project are all ramped up extremes and it was fun to think and play a little unhinged while trying to keep literary form

Saw advice saying 'characters need goals, not vibes' but then I think about Carr's 'A Month in the Country' and how sometimes the atmosphere and weight of place IS the story. Different approaches, both valid.

Character-driven, plot-driven, setting-driven... Writers love these labels but I realize I'm solidly in the 'here's a cool world, now let's see who shows up' camp

Ought to check out Dreyma, Adrian von Ziegler, and Dryzante on Spotify if you like ambient fantasy music

When you stare long enough at a blank page, the blank page begins to stare back at you.

Historical fiction dilemma: Use the Latin term 'contubernium' and sound pretentious, or write 'tent group of 8 soldiers' and feel like I'm dumbing it down

The scenes I'm most proud of somehow end up being shortest in word count. This can’t be right, shouldn’t this moment be at least a page? Now I'm suspicious it's either brilliant or missing something

Maybe it's Hollywood magic, but when writers crumple up bad drafts and throw them away, I think of my stuffed shelves or drive w/ 100 different versions of 'final_FINAL_v2_actuallyFINAL.docx'

‘Kill your darlings’ but I can axe characters. It's cutting the prologue and worldbuilding that kills ME. Unless you're Clive Barker who gets to keep the prologues b/c it’s terrifying not explaining
