New species of native bee from Hawaiʻi! I discovered this a few months ago on the island of Molokaʻi. It's named Hylaeus paumako, from the Hawaiian word paumākō (mourning or grief), as it's the first species from there that's all black even in males. scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/items/817817...

🌻 Out now our paper, "Pollen banking is a critical need for conserving plant diversity" in @natureplants.bsky.social 🌴

🌺 We argue that pollen banking is an essential tool in the plant conservation toolbox that urgently needs focused research attention and resources. 🌸

Soil isn't just underground. With the help of networks of mycorrhizal fungi, soils are formed even on the most vertical cliffs.

Underground Explorer Felipe Morales Armijo is working w/@spununderground.bsky.social to map vertical fungi across the cliffs of Mexico.

Happy World Soils Day.

Newly-described species!! 📒

Schiedea waiahuluensis (Caryophyllaceae)

Perhaps the first new species to be located, then collected by drone.

Our plant collecting drone has been a game changer for documentation and conservation of cliff flora in Hawaii.

Bonus: maybe a new insect too! 🪲
