I know I should be posting about other things here than just what I've written lately. Maybe when I gain a bit more mental capacity. (When my kids are grown??) In the meantime, I listened to the new Jason Isbell disc and have some ...thoughts. open.substack.com/pub/digupthe...

Thrilled for the chance to talk with one of my faves, @rosecousins.bsky.social, about love and songwriting and everything in that Venn diagram. She is the Artist of the Month at The BGS this month. Dig it. thebluegrasssituation.com/read/rose-co...
I know everyone and their brother is talking about Kendrick Lamar right now ... so why not me? Dig this week's Dig Up the Roots Substack post on "Kendrick Lamar, folksinger." open.substack.com/pub/digupthe...
Second Substack is live! This week I got into MY musical roots a little bit. Dig it. Read, subscribe, share, all the things. Thanks yall! open.substack.com/pub/digupthe...
Haha what is that photo!??
Did not realize its author, @jeannetheoharis.bsky.social, is here in the skeets. Give her a follow.
Happy birthday to Mrs. Rosa Parks. A true hero who did one legendary thing and a zillion things that have been glossed over but were no less vital to the movement for racial equity in the US. 'The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks' is a highly recommended read today and every day.
My Substack, Dig Up the Roots, is officially live. Where did I begin? With "folk process" (and WICKED) of course.

Ok yall. I did it. I joined the Roaring 20s. Come subscribe at diguptheroots.substack.com. I'll be ruminating weekly on the intersection of music and community, as I do. Get in early. First post goes up next week. Tell a friend who's into this kind of thing. Thanks! Here we goooooooOOooOO!
Chicken butt. Duh.
Desperately seeking a Muppets Nativity Set. Every year. With no success.
The daily battle: I desperately need to finish this writing but I also desperately need for there to not be crumbs all over the floor. How do I proceed without throwing the robovac against the wall?
(LOLz only while typing that, did it occur to me I could just take ten min and sweep. As you were.)
Just pep talks. With deep stories. Once a week.
I care! I just ... still ... have zero idea where this outburst came from lol.

Day three.
Highly sensitive Gen Alpha son interacting with standard show-no-feelings Boomer grandpa is a real interesting vibe rn.

If you listened to ep of Folk Debate Club where I talked about the necessity of criticism & how destructive that many editors are asking for “good vibes only” “reviews,” & how that’s resulted in us not knowing how to hate something w civility … this guy nails it. (Pretty sure I’ll love Wicked tho!)
If you’re talking about lawmakers, who knows. If you’re talking about avg citizens, it seems like this has to start on the neighborhood level, ie popular education. Like if someone well-known and -liked on the left (hint hint) started talking ad nauseum about popular education, folks might follow?
I've never read him. I'll add him to the list. Thanks!

Day One
OK I'm totally here for this. Starting with my next skeet. I'm on a tear!
Damn, it still slaps. What a great band. Never Tear Us Apart is another favorite. Gonna go crank it now.
The four-year-old: “Mama, please put on Santa Tummy.”
Me: “Santa Tummy? I’ve never heard that song before.”
“No, it’s not a song. It’s a podcast.”
It absolutely is not.
Does anyone know what he’s talking about?
I say that, of course, knowing I still have music journo stuff to do (and stories I’m eyeing in that realm). But damn if it’s not nice to disappear for a few into parallel dimensions and the chellenge of a slant-rhyme metaphor.
I’ve been writing poetry and a weirdass fantasy short story since the election. And doing all the errands. This might be my new way forward?
I also learned this from watching West Wing.
Yes pls.
