My latest for @science.org. - Illegal miners have forced Peru’s oldest environmental research station to suspend work.
Gold mining has so far led to the deforestation of 140,000 ha of Amazonian rainforest in Peru - about half the size of Yosemite National Park

“Freelance journalism in 2025 is an incredibly difficult place to build a career. But, it turns out, it’s a decent enough arena for a scam.”

Hola @fedkukso.bsky.social ! ¿Cómo estás? hace anos nos conocimos en Colombia parte de una beca de EJN, tal vez puedo mandarte un mensaje en privado? Me gustaría preguntar algo! Gracias!
Many freelance journalists lean on writing-adjacent work, even outside journalism, to support their passion for reporting and writing, writes @bwfund.bsky.social early-career fellow @skylerdware.bsky.social in this story w/ @hannahseo.com, @kkdfv.bsky.social, @jtsangwrites.bsky.social, and others. 🧪
This is a very cool study, but it came out in 2024, so I don't really understand why you are making a news release about it in Oct 2025?
Hi! I'm a science journalist based in Ecuador. I'm working on a story for Science Magazine about inequality around microscopy and would love to cover your upcoming event in Banos! Can I DM you?
Linda Guamán and Xiména Abarca fought bravely through humiliation, ignorance, and threats of a 10-year prison sentence to defend their scientific expertise that ultimately saved thousands in Quito during the pandemic.

Grassy dunes, the ocean, and jagged mountains in Iceland
Do you work in conservation science, particularly outside the U.S.? Did you lose your job or funding for your job because of cuts to U.S. federal agencies? Do you want to talk about it? DM me please. (This is for a @biographic.bsky.social story)

My new @science.org editorial on the role of scientists in defending democracy is out today. As authoritarianism takes hold in the US, we must fight for the democratic principles that enable a free society and scientists have a key role. I hope you'll join us.

My latest in @science.org
Ecuador: The government of one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet eliminates its environment and science agencies - well, to be more precise: it MERGES the environment ministry with the mining-energy ministry!

My 1st feature article in Science! This story was one of the hardest I’ve ever worked on since it deals with Indigenous human remains. It took me a whole year of relentless pursuit of Indigenous sources across Ecuador but without them, this story wouldn't shine.
